IELTS Writing Task 2 question
The most important aim of science should be to improve people’s lives. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement? Give reasons for your answers and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Science is a very important tool for humans. The main goal of science is to understand how our world works. However, the most important goal of science should be to make human life better. To a large extent I agree with this idea it is true that learning new things is good, but science is most useful when it helps people and removes pain from their lives.
First, the biggest reason why I agree is because of medicine and health. In the past many people died very young from simple sicknesses and infections. Because of science, doctors could find out how to make medicines and vaccines. For example, during the corona virus pandemic, scientists worked very fast to create the corona vaccine. This scientific through saved millions of people lives around the world and allowed people to safety leave their homes again. If science did not focus on helping sick people during such emergencies so the world would remain in pandemic and danger.
Second, science makes our daily lives much easier and safe. Think about the food we eat and how we travel. Scientists have created better ways to grow food. For examples, they made better seeds so farmers can grow more rice and wheat to feed hungry people. also, science gave us electricity, clear water and fast transport like trains and airplane. All these inventions help us to save time and live comfortable.
On the other hand, we must also think about another side of science. A small part of science should be about learning new things just because we are curious. This means studding faraway stars or looking deep into the ocean. These things do not help our daily life right now.
In conclusion, science is most successful when it helps humans. Exploring new things is fun but making our lives safer and better is its main job.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response addresses all parts of the prompt and maintains a clear position throughout. The arguments regarding medicine and daily convenience are relevant and supported with examples like the COVID-19 vaccine and agricultural advancements. The counter-argument regarding curiosity-driven science is also acknowledged, which adds balance. To reach a higher band, the development of ideas could be more nuanced; for instance, the link between scientific discovery and societal improvement could be explored with more depth rather than listing examples. Overall, the response is well-focused and fulfills the requirements of the task.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. Cohesive devices such as 'First', 'Second', 'On the other hand', and 'In conclusion' are used effectively to signal the structure. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and there is occasional repetition of sentence structures. Improving the variety of linking phrases and ensuring smoother transitions between sentences would enhance the flow and elevate the score.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express ideas clearly. There are some attempts at topic-specific vocabulary like 'pandemic', 'vaccines', and 'infections'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there are minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'scientific through' (likely meant 'breakthrough') and 'studding' (meant 'studying'). To improve, the student should focus on using more precise academic collocations and avoiding repetitive phrasing like 'very important' or 'make... better'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is consistently clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as 'people lives' (should be 'people's lives'), 'safety leave' (should be 'safely leave'), and 'so the world would remain' (unnecessary 'so'). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are minor errors in sentence construction. The student shows an ability to use complex sentences, but the frequency of errors prevents a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and adverb usage would be beneficial.
