Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response addresses the prompt by clearly stating a position in favor of science improving human lives. The ideas are relevant, covering healthcare, technology, and environmental sustainability. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat superficial. For instance, the mention of 'mobile robots dustbins' is a specific example but lacks depth in explaining how this contributes to the broader aim of science. The argument would benefit from more sophisticated reasoning rather than listing examples. While the position is clear throughout, the supporting points are somewhat repetitive and could be extended to reach a higher band level.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. There is a basic progression of ideas from healthcare to technology and future prospects. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and repetitive. Phrases like 'For example' and 'Scientific research also' are used frequently, which makes the flow feel a bit simplistic. Additionally, some transitions between sentences are abrupt, such as the jump from smartphone communication to farming equipment. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring smoother transitions between ideas would enhance the overall coherence of the response.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to convey their meaning clearly. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'devastating' and 'expectancy', but the range is somewhat limited. Some word choices are slightly awkward or imprecise, such as 'plastic ls' (likely a typo for plastics) and 'every day works'. The use of collocations is occasionally unnatural, such as 'scientists also doing research'. To reach a higher band, the student should focus on using more precise academic vocabulary and ensuring correct word forms and spelling.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors that affect the quality of the writing. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('Scientists also doing research'), incorrect pluralization ('equipment’s'), and spelling/typographical errors ('witch' instead of 'with', 'there' instead of 'their', 'plastic ls'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with comma usage. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent the essay from reaching a higher band. A greater focus on proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy is recommended.
