IELTS Writing Task 2 question
The most important aim of science should be to improve people’s lives. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement? Give reasons for your answers and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Currently, science is improving people's lives. The crucial task that science should do is to enhance the way people spend their life. I completely agree with this statement, and in this essay I will give reasons to support my answer.
Firstly, science should focus mainly on providing good and reliable facilities for people's ease. It must produce advancements in the facilities that people use everyday like travelling. By this I mean to say that the transport facilities should be made more advanced to meet people's need. Nowadays, more people are fond of travelling by a bus or any other public transport as it is economical. For example, travelling in France was first carried out by own resources like cars, bikes. etc. However when bus services introduced to help people travel people began to prefer bus for their journey.
Secondly, if science would improve people's lives, people would love to invest in science projects. Science was introduced to help people with their daily chores. By this statement I refer that science should focus on other aspects as well, nevertheless focusing on making an easy way for people to live should be its fundamental goal. For instance, a group of people travelled from India to Canada and they shocked to look that how people were entertained with basic needs in Canada. They reported that in our country people rely mostly on themselves for everything, yet people here are entertained with the advancements in technology. Besides that people who live in Canada started to love their country.
Therefore, I am of the view that science should mainly focus on improving people's lives. If people would be provided with good facilities, they would show devotion to their country.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The essay addresses the prompt and maintains a clear position throughout. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. While you mention transport and general daily needs, the examples provided—such as the anecdote about people traveling from India to Canada—are vague and do not effectively illustrate how science specifically improves lives. The argument remains at a surface level, lacking a deeper exploration of the ethical or practical implications of scientific focus. To reach a higher band, you should provide more concrete, analytical examples that directly link scientific advancement to societal well-being, rather than relying on general observations.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear topic sentence. You use basic cohesive devices like 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'Therefore' to guide the reader. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes mechanical, and the referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the second paragraph where the connection between the Indian-to-Canada example and the main argument is tenuous. The use of cohesive devices is functional but lacks the flexibility and sophistication required for higher bands. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that each sentence flows naturally into the next would enhance the overall coherence.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
Your vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing you to communicate your ideas clearly. You use some topic-specific terms like 'advancements', 'economical', and 'devotion'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there is a reliance on simple, repetitive phrasing (e.g., 'people's lives', 'people's need'). There are also minor issues with word choice, such as 'they shocked to look that how people were entertained', which is unnatural. To improve, try to incorporate a wider range of academic collocations and synonyms to avoid repetition and add precision to your arguments.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with verb tenses and article usage (e.g., 'when bus services introduced', 'they shocked to look that how'). Some sentences are slightly awkward, such as 'By this statement I refer that science should focus on other aspects as well'. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and refining your use of complex sentence structures will help improve your accuracy.
