Student answer (Band 7.0)

Science has always helped humanity to move forward and make lives better. Therefore, I agree with the notion that the main goal of science should be improving human life by supporting it with various advancements in different areas.

In the first place, science has shown its ability to enhance lives in healthcare. Innovations like vaccines, antibiotics, and surgical techniques have drastically lowered mortality rates and extended life expectancy. Thanks to scientific research, diseases once deemed incurable or fatal have been overcome, providing hope and a better quality of life for numerous individuals.

Moreover, science has led to significant progress in communication and technology, resulting in improved convenience and connectivity. Take the Internet, a product of scientific innovation, for example—it has transformed how we obtain information, communicate, and engage in business. It has created opportunities for education, fostering connections between individuals and cultures. The fast evolution of smartphones and other devices has empowered people, making information, services, and social networks easily accessible and enhancing their daily lives.

To conclude, science holds enormous potential to improve lives across different areas. The ongoing quest for scientific knowledge has resulted in innovations in healthcare, technology, and environmental conservation. By giving priority to applying these scientific discoveries for the benefit of humanity, we can create a world that is healthier, more interconnected, and more eco-friendly. (220 words)

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The essay addresses the prompt clearly and maintains a consistent position throughout. However, the response is significantly under the 250-word minimum requirement, which limits the depth of the arguments. While the ideas regarding healthcare and technology are relevant, they are somewhat generic and lack the detailed development required for a higher band. To improve, you should expand on your points with more specific examples or counter-arguments to ensure the response is fully developed and meets the length requirement. Because the essay is 28 words short, the development of ideas is inevitably restricted, preventing a higher score.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. You use cohesive devices such as 'In the first place', 'Moreover', and 'To conclude' effectively to link your points. However, the range of cohesive devices is somewhat limited, and the transitions between sentences could be more varied to improve the flow. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the overall structure is sound, which provides a clear framework for your argument.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'innovations', 'mortality rates', and 'interconnected'. The word choice is generally accurate and appropriate for an academic context. However, the vocabulary is somewhat standard and lacks the 'less common' or 'sophisticated' items that would elevate the essay to a higher band. To improve, try to incorporate more precise academic collocations and avoid repetitive phrasing. The spelling is accurate throughout, and your word choice does not impede communication at any point.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

Your grammar is generally strong, with a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. You use relative clauses and participial phrases effectively, such as 'fostering connections between individuals and cultures'. There are very few grammatical errors, and the punctuation is used correctly to support the clarity of your writing. While the range of structures is sufficient, incorporating a wider variety of complex grammatical forms—such as conditional sentences or passive voice constructions—would demonstrate greater flexibility and control, potentially pushing your score higher.
