IELTS Writing Task 2 question
The most important aim of science should be to improve people’s lives. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement? Give reasons for your answers and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
It is undeniable fact that science has made countless innovations in the world. It is generally believed by the majority of people that science should focus on improving the lives of people. I completely agree with this viewpoint as it would help individuals live a better and happy life.
There are several factors why people prefer that science should aim to focus people's lives. One of the most prominent reasons is that it would make the life of individuals convenient. If there are more facilities, they can use them, do different things easily. For example, people are using faster vehicles to move from one place to another in the modern era. As a result, people feel less stressed to complete their duties.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 250 words, reaching only 122 words. Consequently, the development of ideas is severely restricted. While you state your position clearly in the introduction, the body paragraph is underdeveloped and lacks the depth required for an Academic Task 2 essay. You provide one example regarding vehicles, but the argument remains superficial and does not explore the 'extent' of the agreement or counter-arguments. To improve, you must expand your points with more detailed explanations, evidence, and a second body paragraph to ensure a balanced and thorough discussion of the prompt.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay shows a basic level of organization. You use a clear introduction and a body paragraph, which provides a logical structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is limited and somewhat repetitive (e.g., 'One of the most prominent reasons is...'). Because the essay is so short, the progression of ideas is stunted. To achieve a higher band, you should use a wider variety of linking words and ensure that each paragraph contains a clear topic sentence followed by supporting details that flow naturally into one another.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is generally accurate but quite basic and repetitive. Phrases like 'make the life of individuals convenient' and 'do different things easily' are functional but lack the sophistication expected at higher levels. There is little evidence of less common lexical items or precise collocations. To improve, try to incorporate more academic vocabulary related to the topic of science and societal impact. For example, instead of 'make life convenient,' you could use 'enhance the quality of life' or 'streamline daily activities.'
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The grammar is generally clear, and the meaning is easy to follow. You use simple sentence structures effectively, but there is a lack of complex sentence forms. There are minor errors, such as 'It is undeniable fact' (missing an article: 'an undeniable fact') and 'focus people's lives' (which should be 'focus on people's lives'). To improve, focus on integrating more complex structures, such as relative clauses or conditional sentences, and ensure consistent control over articles and prepositions.
