Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response addresses the prompt by expressing agreement with the statement that science should improve people's lives. However, the development of ideas is limited and repetitive. While you provide examples like calculators and telephones, the explanation of how these relate to the broader philosophical aim of science is superficial. The position is clear, but the arguments lack depth and academic rigor. To improve, you should focus on expanding your reasoning beyond simple lists of household items and consider the broader societal or ethical implications of scientific progress to better meet the requirements of an Academic Task 2 essay.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay is organised into paragraphs, but the progression of ideas is often disjointed. The use of cohesive devices is mechanical and sometimes inaccurate, such as the repetitive use of 'just like' to introduce examples. Referencing is occasionally unclear, particularly with the use of 'they' and 'that's thing', which makes it difficult for the reader to follow the logical flow. Paragraphing is present, but the internal structure of the paragraphs lacks the necessary transition signals to create a smooth, coherent argument. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring clear pronoun references would significantly enhance the readability.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is basic and repetitive, often relying on simple, everyday language. There are frequent errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'science is make more easier' and 'when calculator is finding'. These errors occasionally impede the flow of the text. You rely heavily on a limited set of words, which prevents you from expressing more complex ideas with precision. To reach a higher band, you should aim to incorporate a wider range of topic-specific vocabulary related to technology and societal development, and pay closer attention to word forms and standard collocations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.5
The response contains a high frequency of grammatical errors, including issues with subject-verb agreement, tense consistency, and sentence structure. Many sentences are fragmented or run-on, such as 'The second was a telephone can not find then people are faced so many difficulties'. There is a lack of complex sentence structures, and the errors in basic grammar often make the meaning unclear. To improve, focus on mastering simple sentence construction first, then gradually introduce complex structures like relative clauses or conditional sentences, while ensuring that basic subject-verb agreement and punctuation are accurate.
