Student answer (Band 5.0)

According to some, the most important aim of science should be to improve people's lives. I firmly believe and agree to this statement. Science has changed people's lifestyle and lives in a both positive and negative way. So, I believe in the statement that the most important and necessary aim of science is to make and improve people's life better.

Science have brought, and will continue to bring great benefits to humanity. Science showed people a way to live. We used science to cure many incurable disease that gave humanity a hope to live. Science is used everywhere in today's world. Without science there is no life on earth. The cell phones, the bluetooth devices, the television, the technology that we use are all beacause of the sattelites that are made with the help of science.

While there are a lot of uses of science, some people out there misuse it and create problems. Drugs, Poisons, Steroids and many more. These problems spread faster than the good that science made. People are using Science negatively and are creating nuisance in the society. So, I strongly argue with those who say science can be misused.

In conclusion, Science introduced us to so many technologies that had improved our lifestyle way more ahead of time. Science acts as a catalyst that improves and speedsup the development of society. And we live, we fight our diseases, we connect with people around world, we are egetting ntertained, we are able to learn science because of science.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response addresses the prompt by taking a clear position, but the development of ideas is somewhat superficial. While you mention both the benefits of science and its potential for misuse, the arguments lack depth and specific, well-explained examples. For instance, the list of items like 'cell phones' and 'drugs' is provided without sufficient analysis of how these relate to the core aim of improving lives. To reach a higher band, you should focus on expanding your reasoning—explaining the 'why' and 'how' behind your points—rather than simply listing them. The conclusion is a bit repetitive and does not fully synthesize the arguments presented in the body paragraphs.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organized into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is often mechanical or repetitive. For example, the frequent use of 'Science' at the start of sentences creates a choppy flow. Transitions between ideas are sometimes abrupt, such as the shift between the benefits of science and its misuse. The logical progression within paragraphs could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words (e.g., 'furthermore', 'consequently', 'nevertheless') to better connect your arguments and create a more cohesive flow throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the precision and variety required for a higher band. You rely on basic terms and repeat the word 'science' and 'people' frequently. There are also some errors in word choice and spelling, such as 'beacause', 'sattelites', and 'egetting ntertained'. While the meaning is generally clear, the lack of sophisticated vocabulary or idiomatic expressions limits the score. To improve, try to incorporate more academic collocations and synonyms to avoid repetition and demonstrate a broader range of vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The essay contains a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('Science have brought', 'disease that gave'), missing articles, and punctuation errors. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are persistent throughout the text. To improve, focus on mastering basic subject-verb agreement and proofreading for common slips. Increasing the variety of complex sentence structures, such as using conditional clauses or relative clauses more accurately, would also help elevate your score.
