The most important aim of science should be to improve people’s lives. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement? Give reasons for your answers and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
There is a statement where it is believed that the most important aim of science should be to improve people's daily lives. I do believe this statement due to two main reasons: science is the base of any technology and the convenience of activities in our daily life depends on these technologies. In this essay we will discuss further on these reasons.
Science is the base of any technology ever built. To build any technology we construct the equipment, tools, or materials with the theories of physics, chemistry and biological behaviors. For instance, manufacture of kitchen blenders are made with the direction, time and speed of the blades for the machine to blend the food particles, use of various portions of chemical to make fuels, use of animals for study purposes which helps to understand their behaviors in certain social experiments etc. Therefore, we use science to base our manufacturing process while making these technologies which in return brings innovation.
Likewise, these advance technologies are the reason for the improvement of people's lives. If there is innovation there is convenience, promoting to smoother life style of people. For example, in 1700's there was lack of basic medicines for headaches, common cold, and many occurring diseases, but with advance research on the symptoms and behaviors of diseases medical fields has achieved an improved state where those occurring diseases are easier to fight. Thus, science is the backbone of any improvement in technology which ultimately brings easiness to our daily lives.
In conclusion, I support that science helps with the improvement of our daily lives by making these tools and technologies and thus, it's main aim should be to improve people's lives.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response addresses the prompt and maintains a clear position throughout. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. While you mention that science is the base of technology and that technology improves lives, the arguments remain quite general. For instance, the example regarding kitchen blenders is a bit simplistic and does not fully explore the broader philosophical or ethical implications of science's 'aim.' To reach a higher band, you should provide more nuanced examples—perhaps contrasting life-saving medical research with purely theoretical scientific pursuits—to demonstrate a deeper engagement with the 'extent' of your agreement.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'For instance,' 'Therefore,' and 'In conclusion' to link ideas. However, the progression between sentences can feel a bit mechanical, and some transitions are slightly repetitive. The paragraphing is appropriate, but the flow could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that the relationship between the 'base of technology' and 'improvement of lives' is more tightly integrated throughout the argument.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'innovation,' 'symptoms,' and 'backbone.' However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'manufacture of kitchen blenders are made' (should be 'the manufacturing of... involves') and 'promoting to smoother life style' (should be 'leading to a smoother lifestyle'). The vocabulary is functional but lacks the precision and sophistication required for higher bands. Focusing on more academic collocations and avoiding awkward phrasing will help improve your score in this area.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement and article usage, such as 'there was lack of basic medicines' (should be 'there was a lack') and 'medical fields has achieved' (should be 'fields have achieved'). Punctuation is generally acceptable, but the sentence structure is somewhat repetitive. To improve, aim to incorporate more varied complex sentence forms and proofread carefully to eliminate basic errors in agreement and pluralization.
