IELTS Writing Task 2 question

The most important aim of science should be to improve people’s lives. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement? Give reasons for your answers and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The paramount goal of science should be to enhance individuals' lives. I strongly agree with this statement because science has become a major contributor in the health sector and technology in recent years, which surely improves people's well-being.

We have found cures for many maladies in the contemporary era using scientific research and professionals have built advanced medical equipment using scientific methods. There are many dangerous diseases like cancer, heart problems, diabetes, etc, and traditional methods are not enough to cure these illnesses. Hence, we need medicines and medical infrastructure to provide more effective treatment for diseases. For instance, the United States recently made a robot which provides assistance to doctors in performing critical brain surgeries.

Science and its advancements have been effective in providing ease to people and the most common example is the Artificial Intelligence. AI helps people in day-to-day tasks, learning new things and even as their personal psychologist. Furthermore, people use AI to establish their businesses because it helps in automation of repetitive tasks and manages business operations like website and apps building, which is only possible because of science. For example, a single developer can code a fully functional website in less than five hours with the help of AI tools like claude code. Previously, this task took almost three or four days and required more developers and resources.

To conclude, I firmly agree that science and scientific innovations advance medical and technological inventions day by day and are crucial for the betterment of the lives of the public.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses the prompt clearly and maintains a consistent position throughout. The ideas are relevant, focusing on medical advancements and AI as evidence for the importance of science in improving lives. However, the development is somewhat limited. While the examples provided (robotic surgery and AI coding) are pertinent, the essay would benefit from a more balanced discussion or a deeper exploration of the 'extent' of the agreement, perhaps by briefly acknowledging alternative scientific goals to strengthen the argument. The conclusion is a bit brief and merely restates the introduction rather than synthesizing the main points discussed in the body paragraphs.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two main themes: health and technology. Cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore', 'For instance', and 'To conclude' are used effectively to guide the reader. However, the transition between the general statement about science and the specific example of AI could be smoother. Some sentences feel slightly mechanical in their structure, but the overall progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow throughout the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally appropriate and sufficient for the task. You use some good topic-specific terms like 'paramount', 'maladies', 'contemporary era', and 'automation'. There are occasional minor inaccuracies or slightly unnatural collocations, such as 'provides ease to people' or 'builds advanced medical equipment' (where 'develops' or 'engineers' might be more precise). The range is adequate to convey your meaning clearly, but there is limited use of less common or idiomatic language that would be required for a higher band score. Spelling is accurate throughout.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are error-free, and your meaning is always clear. There are some minor grammatical slips, such as 'the Artificial Intelligence' (the article is unnecessary here) and 'a robot which provides assistance' (a comma before 'which' would improve the flow). You show control over punctuation and verb tenses, which is a strength. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate a wider variety of complex structures, such as conditional sentences or more sophisticated passive constructions, while maintaining this level of accuracy.
