IELTS Writing Task 2 question
The most important aim of science should be to improve people’s lives. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement? Give reasons for your answers and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
Science has evolved throughout the years by the minds of humans. They cared a lot about it to be able to satisfy their needs and to grow as a civilization. Today, it stands as a mandatory need that humanity can't live without.
In my point of view, I strongly agree that the most important aim of science should be to improve people's lives. I have reasons to support my view.
First of all, humanity wouldn't be where it is currently without science. It is the main reason for people having cars, planes, phones and many more technological devices. These tools are all built by the principles of math, physics and computer science. If humanity didn't have these tools, they wouldn't be able to travel quickly, do tasks easily and save time.
Additionally, science is the reason for helping people recover from any injuries or illnesses. Biology was used for creating different medicines and performing surgeries that heal people. Without biology, many people would not live for long.
Also, science is important in languages. It puts rules on how to speak, write and read in every language. It helps people learn new languages.
Moreover, Scientists are considered the most prestigious people on the planet. They are well respected by others and have the highest paying jobs. What they do is important and shouldn't be ignored by the public.
In conclusion, science is the most important thing. It helps us do our tasks easily and quickly, heals people and show that we are an elegant society. I advise everyone to learn it and encourage others to do so.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response addresses the prompt and maintains a clear position throughout. However, the development of ideas is somewhat superficial. While you mention technology and medicine, the arguments are brief and lack depth. For instance, the paragraph regarding language is not clearly linked to the 'improvement of lives' and feels tangential. To reach a higher band, you should expand on your examples with more specific reasoning or real-world evidence. The conclusion is a bit repetitive and introduces a new point about 'elegant society' which is not well-supported by the preceding paragraphs. Focusing on deeper analysis rather than listing benefits would improve your score.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, and there is a clear introduction and conclusion. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'First of all', 'Additionally', and 'Moreover' to signal transitions between ideas. However, the flow between sentences can feel a bit mechanical, and some transitions are slightly repetitive. The referencing is generally clear, but the logical progression within paragraphs could be smoother. For example, the jump from medical science to linguistics in the third and fourth paragraphs lacks a strong thematic bridge. Improving the variety of your linking words and ensuring each paragraph has a singular, well-developed focus will enhance coherence.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using words like 'mandatory', 'civilization', and 'prestigious'. However, the vocabulary is largely functional and lacks the precision or sophistication required for higher bands. There are some instances of slightly awkward phrasing, such as 'science is important in languages' and 'show that we are an elegant society', which do not fully capture the intended meaning. To improve, try to incorporate more topic-specific collocations and academic vocabulary related to scientific progress and societal impact, while ensuring that your word choices are precise and contextually appropriate.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'science has evolved... by the minds of humans' (which is slightly unnatural) and 'science is the reason for helping people recover' (which is a bit wordy). There are also minor issues with article usage and prepositional phrases. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. To improve, focus on varying your sentence structures further and proofreading for small errors in subject-verb agreement and preposition choice.
