The most important aim of science should be to improve people’s lives. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement? Give reasons for your answers and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Science has played a vital role in the development of human civilization. While some people believe that its primary purpose should be to improve people's lives, others argue that science should also focus on expanding knowledge. I strongly agree that the most important aim of science is to enhance human well-being because it contributes to better healthcare, technological progress, and solutions to global challenges.
Firstly, scientific research has significantly improved healthcare and increased life expectancy. Medical discoveries such as vaccines, antibiotics, and advanced surgical techniques have saved millions of lives around the world. For example, the rapid development of COVID-19 vaccines demonstrated how science can protect public health and reduce the impact of deadly diseases. Without scientific innovation, many illnesses would remain untreatable.
Secondly, science has transformed everyday life through technological advancements. Modern inventions such as smartphones, the internet, and renewable energy technologies have made communication easier, increased productivity, and improved living standards. In agriculture, scientific methods have enhanced crop production, helping to reduce food shortages and support growing populations. These developments clearly show that science directly benefits society.
In conclusion, I strongly agree that improving people's lives should be the main objective of science. Scientific achievements in medicine, technology, and environmental protection have made the world a better place. Although some research is driven by curiosity rather than immediate practical benefits, it often contributes to human progress in the long run.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The essay addresses the prompt clearly and maintains a consistent position throughout. The ideas are relevant and supported by examples such as COVID-19 vaccines and modern technology. However, the response is 232 words long, failing to meet the 250-word minimum requirement. This under-length significantly impacts the development of the argument, as the points could have been expanded further to provide a more comprehensive discussion. While the position is clear, the lack of sufficient length prevents a higher score, as the task is not fully developed according to the instructions.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is well-organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central topic sentence, such as 'Firstly, scientific research has significantly improved healthcare' and 'Secondly, science has transformed everyday life'. Cohesive devices like 'Firstly', 'Secondly', 'For example', and 'In conclusion' are used effectively to guide the reader through the argument. The progression of ideas is logical, and the paragraphing is appropriate. The essay flows well, making it easy to follow the writer's line of reasoning.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is generally appropriate and precise for the topic. The student uses terms like 'human civilization', 'technological progress', 'scientific innovation', and 'renewable energy' effectively. There is a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey ideas clearly. While there are no major errors in word choice, the range is somewhat standard and lacks the more sophisticated, less common lexical items that would push the score into the higher bands. Overall, the vocabulary is accurate and supports the communication of ideas well.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The essay demonstrates a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. For instance, the use of 'While some people believe that..., others argue that...' shows a good grasp of complex sentence formation. The grammar is generally accurate, with very few errors in punctuation or syntax. Most sentences are error-free, and the control over tense and subject-verb agreement is consistent. The writing is clear and easy to read, reflecting a solid command of English grammar suitable for this level.
