Student answer (Band 5.0)

Some people argue that improving life should be the main goal of science,I agree with this statement to large extend, however science done only for knowldedge also has its own value.

There is no doubt that science has made the lives of people much better.Medical science is the biggest example of this, vaccines and treatments saved lives of millions of people around the world. As many diseases which were dangerous in the past can be cured now.Science has also improved the daily life through technology, people can work, study and communicate easily because of internet and mobile phone. It helped in agriculture, new farming methods helps the countries to produce more food for their growing population.Because of these advantages many people feel that governments should spend moeny on the reasearch which gives advantage to people.

In addition,i think science should not only focus on the practical results. Many big discoveries in history came from the scientists who were just curious about things. For example, research on electricity looked useless for normalmpeople at that time, but later it changed the whole world. If the scintist are forced to show quick benefits every time, some important knowledge may never be discovered.

In conclusion,i agree that improving the lives of people is very important aim of science but it should not be the only one because the research done for curiousity can also bring benefits in future.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The essay addresses the prompt by discussing both the importance of science in improving lives and the value of curiosity-driven research. However, the response is under the 250-word minimum, which significantly impacts the development of ideas. While the position is clear, the arguments are somewhat brief and lack the depth required for a higher band. The conclusion is present but could be more robust. To improve, you should expand on your examples and provide more detailed explanations for your points to ensure the word count is met and the ideas are fully explored.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'In addition', 'For example', and 'In conclusion' are used to link ideas. However, the flow is occasionally interrupted by punctuation errors, such as the comma splice in the first sentence ('...science,I agree...'). Paragraphing is used appropriately, but the transition between the two main body paragraphs could be smoother. Improving the variety of cohesive devices and ensuring correct sentence boundary punctuation would help elevate the coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing you to express your ideas clearly. You use some relevant topic-specific terms like 'medical science', 'vaccines', and 'agriculture'. However, there are several spelling errors ('knowldedge', 'moeny', 'reasearch', 'scintist', 'curiousity') and some informal phrasing. To reach a higher band, you should aim to use a wider range of vocabulary, including less common lexical items, and ensure that your spelling is accurate. Focus on using more precise academic collocations rather than relying on general-purpose words.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede the flow. Issues include missing articles ('the internet'), subject-verb agreement errors ('new farming methods helps'), and punctuation mistakes, particularly comma splices and missing spaces after commas. While the meaning is generally clear, the frequency of these errors prevents a higher score. You should focus on proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy, specifically checking for subject-verb agreement and ensuring that complex sentences are punctuated correctly.
