Student answer (Band 5.5)
The most important aim of science should be to improve people’s lives. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement? Give reasons for your answers and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
For recent centuries, science plays a vital role in our society and for the innovation of much needed technology. However, scientists also developed some chemicals and weapons which has become a great threat to the mankind. Despite all its disadvantages, modern science has still more benefits and positive use-cases in our daily life. I strongly agree with the notion for some reasons.
On the one hand, if governments invest more on medical science rather than unnecessary projects like space exploration than science can research more to save us from many diseases and can invent more advance machines and effective medicine. Nowadays, hospitals contains all the necessary gadgets which can save a human life but its still need more enhancement. The pharmaceutical companies are now creating different types of drugs just because of modern research. For example, in past, when medical science was not advanced as much as its today, people died in large quantities because of the unavailability of effective and curable drugs.
On the other hand, with the help of modern science, the transport system is now so much advanced and even cheap. Now every person can buy any type of vehicle in small amount which was so much expensive in the past and even it was not reliable, however, scientists and engineers invented these things for the use of every person in their daily life. For instance, cars are providing comfort to the travelers and automobile industry is responsible for the growth of country's economy such as Germany is producing more cars than any other country and their economy is booming just because of this innovation.
In conclusion, I believe that everybody is getting benefits from the modern science in different ways. However, if science focus more on basic needs of people than all the systems can become more advance and even more innovations can happen.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
You have addressed all parts of the prompt and maintained a clear position throughout. The essay is well-structured, with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You provide relevant examples, such as the mention of medical advancements and the automotive industry in Germany, to support your arguments. However, the development of ideas could be more nuanced. For instance, the argument regarding space exploration is a bit simplistic, and the link between the automotive industry and the 'most important aim of science' could be more explicitly connected to the idea of improving lives. Overall, the response is relevant and well-focused.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is logically organized, with a clear progression of ideas from one paragraph to the next. You use cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'For instance' to guide the reader. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and there are minor issues with referencing and sentence flow. For example, the phrase 'in small amount' is awkward, and the connection between sentences in the second paragraph could be smoother. Paragraphing is used appropriately, and the overall structure is clear and easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, including terms like 'innovation', 'pharmaceutical', and 'unavailability'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'in large quantities' (instead of 'in large numbers') and 'in small amount' (instead of 'at a low cost'). You attempt to use some less common vocabulary, but these occasional errors prevent a higher score. To improve, focus on learning collocations and ensuring that words are used in their correct context.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede the flow of the text. Examples include 'For recent centuries, science plays' (should be 'For recent centuries, science has played'), 'which has become' (should be 'which have become' to agree with 'chemicals and weapons'), and 'hospitals contains' (should be 'hospitals contain'). While these errors do not prevent the meaning from being understood, they are frequent enough to limit the score. Increasing your control over subject-verb agreement and tense consistency will help improve your score.
