IELTS Writing Task 2 question
The most important aim of science should be to improve people’s lives. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement? Give reasons for your answers and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Science plays a vital role in the development of modern society. While some people believe that the primary purpose of science is to improve human lives, other argue that science should also focus on expanding knowledge without immediate benefit to people. I largely agree to the point that the most important aim of science is to enhance people's lives.
On of the main ways science benefited the society is by improving the health care system. Scientific research had led to the development of vaccines, medicines and advanced medical equipment, which have increased life expectancy and reduced the spread of many deadly diseases. For example, modern vaccines have protected millions of people from diseases which we never expected to fight with life COVID.
Science is also made everyday life more convenient and efficient. Technological advancements like mobile phone, video calls, internet and renewable energy systems, have transformed way of living life never before. These inventions have changed the way people communicate, work and travel in compared to few years back. In agriculture sector, scientific researches have improved the way we produce food and help farmers grow crops more efficiently, reducing the risk of food shortages.
However, some scientific research is carried out simply to increase human knowledge rather that improving people lives or solving immediate problems. Field such as astronomy and theoretical physics may not appear to improve anything immediately but in future these advancements may result in better understanding when any situation arise.
To conclude, i strongly agree that the main aim of science should be improving people's day to day life like better technology to work, heath improvement, travel etc. However, sectors like astronomy and theory also plays a important role in building knowledge and improving better understanding of the nature.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the prompt and maintains a clear position throughout. The main ideas—healthcare and convenience—are relevant and supported with examples. However, the development is somewhat superficial; for instance, the mention of COVID-19 is vague, and the discussion on theoretical science could be more deeply integrated into the argument. While the position is consistent, the essay would benefit from more nuanced exploration of the 'extent' of agreement, perhaps by discussing the synergy between basic and applied science more thoroughly. Overall, it meets the requirements for a Band 6.5/7.0, but sits more comfortably at 6.5 due to the lack of depth in supporting arguments.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. Cohesive devices such as 'On of the main ways', 'Science is also', and 'However' are used to guide the reader. However, there are some mechanical errors in cohesion, such as 'In agriculture sector' (missing article) and 'in compared to' (incorrect prepositional phrase). The progression of ideas is generally clear, but the transition between the benefits of science and the counter-argument could be smoother. The use of referencing is generally effective, though some sentences feel slightly disjointed.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express ideas clearly. There is an attempt to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'renewable energy systems' and 'theoretical physics'. However, there are several word-choice errors and awkward collocations, such as 'other argue' (should be 'others argue'), 'science is also made' (should be 'has also made'), and 'improving better understanding' (redundant). The range is sufficient to convey meaning, but the lack of precision and occasional errors in word formation prevent it from reaching a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the writer attempts complex sentences, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with articles ('the agriculture sector'), verb tenses ('Scientific research had led' instead of 'has led'), and prepositions ('agree to the point' instead of 'agree with the point'). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are minor errors such as 'life COVID' which is unclear. The errors do not impede communication, but they are frequent enough to be noticeable and suggest a lack of control over more complex grammatical forms.
