IELTS Writing Task 2 question

The most important aim of science should be to improve people’s lives. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement? Give reasons for your answers and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The main goal of science should be to enhance people's lives. I strongly agree with this statement because scientific research requires an immense amount of effort and investment in order to prove a theory or to introduce any medicine.

On one hand, science is a vast and difficult subject to study which provides various kinds of information regarding weather, any atomic structure, regulatory system of a human body and many more. I am inclined to believe that its primary goal should include refining human lives because of many reasons. First would be, scientific research demands numerous resources and mankind to get successful results. In the medical field, pharmaceutical labs perform many experiments in order to successfully introduce an effective medicine in the market. The space scientists pour their whole life into research to gain information regarding elements in space and their impact on earth. The second reason being, the national economy boost offered by a science innovation.

On the other hand, this field of study can provide an excessive amount of knowledge which might not be useful in development but it can clear the curiosity regarding natural causes and provide practical reasoning behind historical events. For instance, research on the topic of earthquakes can provide information regarding the cause of it.

In conclusion, the knowledge an individual can gain from science is crucial, however, I strongly believe that the main aim of the subject should be improving human lives because of the effort and resources it requires to achieve a results.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt and maintains a clear position throughout. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. While you mention medical research and space exploration, the arguments are brief and lack depth. For instance, the point about the 'national economy boost' is introduced but not explained or supported with an example. To reach a higher band, you should expand on your points by explaining the 'how' and 'why' more thoroughly. The conclusion restates your position, but the reasoning provided ('effort and resources') is a repetition of the introduction rather than a synthesis of the arguments presented in the body paragraphs.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, and there is a clear progression of ideas. You use some cohesive devices such as 'On one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'In conclusion' to signal the structure. However, the use of some linking phrases is slightly mechanical or awkward, such as 'First would be' and 'The second reason being'. Additionally, the transition between the idea of scientific curiosity and the example of earthquakes is a bit abrupt. Improving the variety and natural flow of your cohesive devices would enhance the overall coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'pharmaceutical', 'investment', and 'regulatory system'. However, there are instances of imprecise word choice and collocation errors, such as 'mankind to get successful results' (which is unclear) and 'clear the curiosity' (should be 'satisfy curiosity'). Some phrasing is repetitive, particularly the use of 'information regarding'. To improve, focus on using more precise academic collocations and avoid repeating the same vocabulary within short distances. The range is sufficient to communicate your ideas, but it lacks the flexibility and precision required for higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While many sentences are clear, there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader. Examples include 'any atomic structure' (incorrect article usage), 'regulatory system of a human body' (missing article), and 'achieve a results' (pluralization error). Some sentences are slightly awkward, such as 'The second reason being, the national economy boost offered by a science innovation.' While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your meaning, they indicate a need for more consistent control over articles, pluralization, and sentence construction to achieve a higher score.
