Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response addresses the prompt by expressing a clear position in favor of the statement. However, the development of ideas is limited. While you mention medical advancements and technology, the arguments are somewhat repetitive and lack depth. For instance, the example regarding cancer is vague and lacks specific detail or logical progression. To reach a higher band, you should aim to extend your ideas by explaining the 'why' and 'how' more thoroughly, rather than simply stating that science is helpful. The conclusion is also quite brief and does not effectively summarize the main points discussed in the body paragraphs.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organized into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. You use basic cohesive devices like 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'In conclusion' to signal transitions. However, the flow between sentences is often mechanical, and some referencing is unclear (e.g., 'those disease who was very dangerous'). The logical progression within paragraphs is sometimes hindered by repetitive phrasing and simple sentence structures. To improve, try to use a wider variety of linking words and ensure that pronouns clearly refer back to the intended nouns to create a smoother, more cohesive text.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but remains quite basic and repetitive. You frequently use the phrase 'important role' and 'lives of people' throughout the essay. There are also errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'discover his medicine' instead of 'develop treatments' and 'keep clean of our environment'. To achieve a higher score, you need to demonstrate a wider range of vocabulary, including less common lexical items and more precise collocations related to the topic of science and societal progress.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The essay relies heavily on simple sentence structures. While there are some attempts at complex sentences, they are often marred by grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('smartphones is', 'science improve') and incorrect relative pronouns ('disease who was'). Punctuation is generally functional, but the frequency of errors in basic grammar is noticeable and occasionally makes the text difficult to follow. To improve, focus on mastering subject-verb agreement, correct article usage, and diversifying your sentence structures by incorporating more complex clauses accurately.
