IELTS Writing Task 2 question
The most important aim of science should be to improve people’s lives. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement? Give reasons for your answers and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Some people believe that the main goal of scientific discoveries and inventions must be to make people's life better. While, others think science should bring comfort regardless of whether it improves life or not. An easy life does not always mean an improved life. I personally believe that both of them should come through science, with improvement being the priority.
Those advocating for comfort argue that there is no purpose of scientific advances if one cannot derive peace and comfort from it. The research takes restless nights and days, sometimes months and years, for scientists to reach a conclusion and discover something to be later used as technology. All that stress taken by every single person involved in the process as well as consumption of resources are for the sake of attaining stability. For instance, from bicycle to a car, comfort can be seen as a primary purpose in this evolutionary process of inventions even though, standard of living also boosts but that is considered to be secondary by the advocates of preferring comfort over improvement.
By contrast, those expecting the improvement of life from scientific advancements put the comfort in the second place rather than completely discarding it. Such individuals may be more concerned about their outward personalities that is in other people's eye. For example, people are using AI to come up with way better ideas than human without paying any attention to what harmful consequences it might bring if used in wrong way.
Despite comfort being important, i personally believe that first priority must always be improving life. Comfort comes along with it most of the time.
In conclusion, the purpose of scientific discoveries should be to improve life standard.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
You have addressed the prompt and maintained a clear position throughout. However, the development of ideas is somewhat uneven. While you introduce the two sides of the argument, the explanation of the 'comfort' perspective is clearer than the 'improvement' perspective. The example regarding AI is a bit tangential and does not fully explain how it relates to the core argument of 'improving lives' versus 'comfort'. To reach a higher band, ensure that every example directly supports your central thesis. The conclusion is a bit brief and could have been used to better synthesize your main points.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is logically organized into paragraphs, and there is a clear progression of ideas. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'By contrast' and 'In conclusion', to guide the reader. However, some transitions feel a bit mechanical, and the flow between sentences could be smoother. For instance, the transition between the discussion of comfort and the example of the bicycle is slightly abrupt. Additionally, the referencing in the second paragraph is occasionally unclear, which makes the relationship between ideas feel slightly disjointed at times.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'scientific advances', 'evolutionary process', and 'attaining stability'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'outward personalities' and 'way better ideas', which are slightly informal for an academic essay. To improve, focus on using more precise academic collocations and avoiding colloquial phrasing. The range is sufficient to communicate your meaning, but it lacks the flexibility and sophistication required for higher bands.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'the research takes restless nights' (should be 'requires'), 'from bicycle to a car' (missing articles), and 'in other people's eye' (should be plural). Additionally, there are minor punctuation and capitalization errors, such as the lowercase 'i' when referring to yourself. These errors do not impede communication, but they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on subject-verb agreement and article usage.
