IELTS Writing Task 2 question

The most important aim of science should be to improve people’s lives. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement? Give reasons for your answers and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The major aim for doing science should be improvement of people’s lives. I strongly agree with this statement, because without considering people’s benefits it can result in harmful inventions and destruction of the world.

Nowadays, science is undergoing numerous advancements in terms of invention of new products, techniques, and tools which save our time and make our lives convenient. For instance, invention of artificial intelligence (AI) can help us to do many tasks in less time and more efficiently. In academia, it has become easier to find relevant literature with the help of AI tools like Claude or Deepseek. In addition, it also help us to draft emails, manuscripts, and official reports. Moreover, in medical sector, science has made progress and invented diagnostic tools that can diagnose diseases at an early stage or even before any physical symptoms. it also help us to design new drugs that will be able to target pathogens that have become resistant to the current treatments.

Although these innovations are making people’s lives easier, it can be destructive if there will be no regulatory controls. Firstly, some people do science to make biological weapons that could affect millions of people. For instance, in the year of 2019, there was an outbreak of a deadly viral infection, emerged originally from Wuhan, a city of China. Later, it spread all over the world, and results in a large number of people’s deaths. It was due to a mishandling of science by a scientist in the laboratory, that can be intentional or by a mistake. That is why individuals should focus on its objective before doing science. Secondly, nuclear weapons are made in many countries for their defense from enemies. Sometimes, powerful countries use those weapons to threat low-income countries, this can may loss of people's lives and properties. Such inventions could result in loss of people's lives as well as destruction of their properties.

In conclusion, people who are involves in science should consider ethical concerns before inventing or making such tools and techniques. They should ensure that it will not affect people's lives.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have clearly addressed the prompt and maintained a consistent position throughout the essay. You provide relevant arguments for both the benefits of science and the necessity of ethical regulation. However, the development of your ideas is somewhat uneven. For instance, the example regarding the 2019 outbreak is a bit speculative and lacks a direct, substantiated link to the prompt's core theme of 'improving lives' versus 'harmful inventions.' To reach a higher band, ensure that your supporting examples are more universally accepted or logically grounded to avoid over-generalisation. Overall, the response is well-structured and directly answers the question.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organised with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use cohesive devices such as 'Nowadays,' 'For instance,' 'In addition,' and 'Although' to guide the reader through your arguments. However, the transition between the second and third paragraphs could be smoother. Additionally, some referencing is slightly mechanical, and there are minor issues with paragraph flow, such as the sudden shift to the 2019 outbreak example. Despite these minor issues, the progression of ideas is clear, and each paragraph has a central topic that is easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'pathogens,' 'regulatory controls,' and 'ethical concerns' appropriately. You attempt to use less common vocabulary, though there are occasional inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'it also help us' (subject-verb agreement) and 'this can may loss' (grammatical error). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the precision and sophistication required for higher bands. Expanding your use of collocations and academic phrasing would significantly improve your score in this criterion.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this level. However, there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader. Examples include 'it also help us' (should be 'helps'), 'this can may loss' (should be 'can lead to the loss'), and 'people who are involves' (should be 'involved'). While these errors do not impede communication, they are persistent throughout the text. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of modal verbs. Increasing the frequency of error-free complex sentences will help you move into the 7.0 band.
