Student answer (Band 5.5)

The most important aim of science is to improve people's life and to make the daily works more easier and convinient. It is correct that science has completely changed our way of living and thinking. Now a days, we experience a life that the people of the past couldn't have imagined, it was all due to science. Science has created different machines to do the time consuming work in just a couple of minutes without any human effort. Science has also shorten the distances by buses, cars, planes and other modes of transportation. It is due to the development by science that we can travel across the globe in a couple of hours which took years of traveling. Internet is the most important invention of science which has converted the whole world into a global village. Many people use internet to make their both ends meet.

Science also has some demerits which are not discussed. Some of them are lack of work, which means that all of the work is done by machines and humans are becoming lazy by resting all day long. Internet is one of the most important invention of the modern day which is being used for sinister goals like people use internet for cybercrimes, spreading false information and other evil intents.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 250 words, which significantly impacts the development of ideas. While you address the prompt by discussing the benefits and drawbacks of science, the arguments remain superficial. For instance, you mention that science makes work easier and discuss cybercrimes, but these points are not fully extended or supported with specific examples. To improve, you must provide a more balanced and detailed exploration of the topic, ensuring that your position is clearly maintained throughout. The current length prevents a full development of the argument, leading to a partial response to the task requirements.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organised into two main paragraphs, but the progression of ideas is somewhat limited. While there is a basic attempt to use cohesive devices, the transitions between sentences are often mechanical or repetitive. For example, the frequent use of 'Science' at the start of sentences creates a repetitive structure. Paragraphing is present, but the second paragraph is quite brief and lacks a clear concluding thought or summary. To achieve a higher band, you should focus on using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear topic sentence that flows logically into the next.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the range and precision required for higher bands. You rely on basic terms such as 'good', 'bad', and 'important'. There are also some issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'make their both ends meet' (the correct idiom is 'make ends meet') and 'make the daily works more easier' (which is grammatically redundant). To improve, try to incorporate more sophisticated vocabulary related to scientific advancement and its societal impact, and ensure that you use collocations accurately to convey your meaning more effectively.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay contains a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors. Examples include 'Now a days' (should be 'Nowadays'), 'Science has also shorten' (should be 'shortened'), and 'Internet is the most important invention' (missing the article 'The'). Additionally, there are punctuation and phrasing issues, such as 'make the daily works more easier and convinient' (should be 'make daily tasks easier and more convenient'). While these errors do not completely impede communication, they occur frequently enough to affect the overall clarity and flow of your writing.
