Student answer (Band 6.5)
Science is a vast topic which inspects the core concepts of our sorroundings at a level which is not understandable to most people, making it a respectable division in our society. There are many people who argue that science is mostly the tool for exploring the earth's unknown aspects and behavior, however, I firmly believe that its primary aim should always be to improve the current condition of the lives of people.
Science and technology can influence the lives of the inhabitants of the earth to an extent that we can only imagine. This sector often involves the most brilliant minds of our society, who can greatly contribute their knowledge and creativity for the prosperity of human being. For example, we have already seen that biologists are developing a cure for cancer, which has always been regarded as a deadly illness. If the scientists can succeed, it will surely alleviate the agonies of many patients.
Furthermore, we know that science has already developed technology like Artificial Intelligence (AI) which can change how we see the world today. It is expected from the responsible authority to implement this superior technology to bring drastic positive changes in the lives of people. For instance, this AI tool can be used to enhance research efficiency to accelerate possible production of new resources of food production by appplying genetic modification.
Admittedy, scienctists will obviously study the behavior of the revolving earth to grasp a better understanding of the world we live in. For instance, sending astronauts to space might not introduce any instant advantage for the people living in earth, but it can inspire the young generation to expand their imagination beyond what they can only see. Nevertheless, it can certainly be argued that the primary goal of scientists should always be the welfare of the people as most of their research works are possible due to the taxes provided by the general people.
To sum up, scientists are an inseparable part of our society who can do immense good for humanity through their knowledge and vision. They should always put the priority of the society first and act accordingly.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response addresses all parts of the prompt, maintaining a clear position throughout. You effectively argue that while scientific exploration has intrinsic value, its primary focus should be on human welfare. The ideas are well-developed, particularly the examples regarding cancer research and AI, which provide concrete support for your stance. The counter-argument regarding space exploration is also well-integrated and balanced against your main point. To reach a higher band, ensure that the link between the 'taxes provided by the general people' and the 'primary goal' is more explicitly connected to the ethical responsibility of scientists, rather than just a financial one.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the transition between the benefits of science and the counter-argument is smooth. You use a range of cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore', 'For instance', and 'Nevertheless' effectively. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical. To improve, try to vary the way you introduce examples and ensure that the concluding paragraph does more than just summarize, perhaps by offering a final thought on the future implications of your argument.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your ideas with precision. Phrases like 'alleviate the agonies', 'inseparable part of our society', and 'drastic positive changes' show a good command of language. There are a few minor spelling errors, such as 'sorroundings', 'appplying', 'Admittedy', and 'scienctists', which are likely slips but should be avoided. To reach a higher band, incorporate more sophisticated collocations and idiomatic expressions to demonstrate a more flexible and natural control of the language.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most sentences are error-free, and your control of punctuation is generally good. There are occasional minor errors, such as 'human being' (should be plural 'human beings') and 'living in earth' (should be 'on earth'). These errors do not impede communication. To aim for a higher band, try to incorporate a wider variety of complex grammatical structures, such as conditional sentences or passive voice constructions, with greater consistency to demonstrate full flexibility.
