Student answer (Band 5.0)

Recently, there has been an ongoing discussion about the impact of science in society. While some believe that the most important aim of science is to better people life, others think economic growth should be it main purpose. I strongly agree with the former view, as it will be beneficial to individuals and society. This essay will discuss the reasons for my stand, before reaching a conclusion.

Firstly, the main reason why I agree to this view is that if humans lifes are seen as a second option a lot of individuals will die of diseases. This is because science has helped produced drugs to cure some many types of sicknesses, and if producing drugs to improve human lifes comes as a second option, the world will be unhealthy to live in. For instance, In Nigeria so many sick patients has died of cancer not because of the sickness, but because doctors has refused to give medical attention because the patient could not afford the money.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.0

The response is significantly under the 250-word minimum requirement, which severely impacts the development of the argument. While you state a clear position, the essay is incomplete, lacking a second body paragraph and a proper conclusion. The ideas presented are under-developed; for example, the argument regarding cancer patients in Nigeria is not clearly linked to the prompt's core theme of science's primary aim. Because the response is less than 200 words, it fails to address all parts of the task adequately, resulting in a low score for task achievement.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay shows some attempt at logical organization with an introduction and a body paragraph. However, the lack of a full essay structure makes it difficult to assess overall progression. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Firstly' and 'For instance', but the limited length prevents the development of a cohesive argument. The transition between the introduction and the body paragraph is functional, but the abrupt ending significantly disrupts the flow of the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for basic communication but lacks the range and precision required for higher bands. There are several errors in word form and collocation, such as 'better people life' (improve people's lives) and 'it main purpose' (its main purpose). The range of vocabulary is limited, relying on simple phrasing. To improve, you should focus on using more precise academic collocations and ensuring correct grammatical forms for nouns and pronouns.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Examples include 'humans lifes' (human lives), 'science has helped produced' (science has helped produce), and 'doctors has refused' (doctors have refused). There is a limited range of sentence structures, and the errors in subject-verb agreement and pluralization are persistent throughout the text. While the meaning is generally understandable, the frequency of these errors prevents a higher score.
