Student answer (Band 5.5)

From past few decades, science has transformed many impossible things into possible and in many ways it made peoples' lives easy. Therefore, as per some individuals, to make peoples' lives better should be the predominant goal of science. However, I strongly disagree with this opinion. This essay will give the reasons and relevant examples to strengthen my perspective.

To begin with, it is irrefutable that science made individuals' lives easier. Consequently, it also created many negative impact on peoples' health. As the science makes product to make their life easy, people becomes more dependent on that product. Which is not only makes humans physically weak but also makes them lazy. Moreover, science also demands for resources and large amount of money for research and development. which could make great impact on the economy of a country as well.

On the other hand, instead of just focusing on one single thing, there are so plenty of sectors which are genuinely requires for scientific solutions. Firstly, the exhaustion of fuel from various transportation vehicles contributes vastly in the air pollution. In this way, scientist can work on it and reduce the impact of exhausted gases to nature. Furthermore, to save fossil fuel and for conservation of the environment, many scientist are working to find more sustainable and reusable energy source. The electric car from Tesla is the revolutionary innovation. Because, it uses electricity instead of fossil fuel which is more reliable option.

In conclusion, there are enough scientific research has done to improve humans' lives and we have many other options to focus on. That is why, I strongly disagree with this notion.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses the prompt but suffers from a lack of clarity regarding the writer's position. While you state you 'strongly disagree,' the arguments provided are somewhat contradictory. You argue that science has negative impacts (making people lazy/weak) and then suggest that science should focus on environmental issues instead of just 'improving lives.' This suggests you actually agree that the *current* focus is too narrow, rather than disagreeing with the importance of improving lives. The ideas are relevant but lack sufficient development, particularly in explaining why environmental progress is not considered an improvement to human life.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organised into paragraphs, which is a positive step. However, the logical progression is often hindered by the misuse of cohesive devices. For example, 'Consequently' is used to link the idea that science makes life easier to the claim that it causes negative health impacts, which is a non-sequitur. Additionally, some sentences are fragmented, such as 'Which is not only makes humans physically weak...' and 'which could make great impact...', which disrupts the flow of ideas. The use of linking words like 'Moreover' and 'Firstly' is present but often mechanical.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the precision required for higher bands. There are several instances of awkward phrasing and collocation errors, such as 'made many negative impact' (should be 'had many negative impacts') and 'there are so plenty of sectors' (should be 'there are plenty of sectors'). You rely on basic vocabulary and struggle with word forms, such as using 'scientist' (singular) when referring to the scientific community in general. To improve, focus on using more academic collocations and ensuring correct pluralisation.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

There is a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but the accuracy is inconsistent. Frequent errors in subject-verb agreement ('people becomes', 'there are enough scientific research has done') and article usage ('to nature', 'the revolutionary innovation') are noticeable. Many sentences are grammatically incomplete or incorrectly punctuated, such as starting sentences with 'Which' or 'Because' in a way that creates fragments. While the meaning is generally clear, the high frequency of these errors prevents the essay from reaching a higher band score.
