The most important aim of science should be to improve people’s lives. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement? Give reasons for your answers and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

From few decades, science has transformed many impossible things into possible and in many ways it made peoples' lives easy. Therefore, as per some individuals, to make peoples' lives better should be the predominant goal of science. However, I strongly strongly with this opinion. This essay will give the reasons and relevant examples to strengthen my perspective.

To begin with, although, many scientific innovation makes people lazy and physically disabled, people still demands for scientific researches to make their life more easy. At first, in Healthcare, science has become extremely important in surgeries. Nowadays, many surgeries are done by robots and doctors also prefers to do a surgery through robots as it provides more precision and accuracy. Moreover, many factories are keen to use robots not just to increase production but also reduce the man power. Eventually, it also reduces the production cost as well.

On the other hand, instead of just focusing on one single thing, there are so plenty of sectors which are genuinely requires for scientific solutions. Firstly, the exhaustion of fuel from various transportation vehicles contributes vastly in the air pollution. In this way, scientist can work on it and reduce the impact of exhausted gases to nature. Furthermore, to save fossil fuel and for conservation of the environment, many scientist are working to find more sustainable and reusable energy source. The electric car is the revolutionary innovation. Because, it uses electricity instead of fossil fuel which is more reliable option.

In conclusion, without a doubt, there are so many scientific research has already done to make human's lives better and easier. But to cope with increasing demand of resources and the accuracy, precision and reliability people get through science, requires for more such research. That is why, I strongly agree with this notion.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The essay addresses the prompt, but the position is inconsistent. In the introduction, you state you 'strongly strongly' (likely a typo for disagree) with the opinion, but the conclusion states, 'That is why, I strongly agree with this notion.' This contradiction makes your stance unclear. While you provide relevant examples like healthcare robotics and electric vehicles, the development of these ideas is somewhat superficial. The argument lacks a clear focus on the 'extent' of your agreement, and the transition between the idea of science making people 'lazy' and the benefits of technology is not fully explored. To improve, ensure your position is clearly stated and maintained throughout the essay.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organised into paragraphs, but the logical progression is hindered by the contradictory stance mentioned above. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'To begin with,' 'Moreover,' and 'On the other hand,' but they are sometimes used incorrectly or mechanically. For instance, 'although' is used at the start of a sentence without a following clause, and 'Eventually' is used to mean 'consequently' or 'furthermore,' which is a misuse. Referencing is occasionally unclear, and the flow between sentences is sometimes disjointed, making the reader work harder to follow your line of reasoning.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, but there are frequent errors in word choice and collocation. Phrases like 'From few decades' (should be 'For a few decades'), 'people still demands' (subject-verb agreement error), and 'there are so plenty of sectors' (incorrect phrasing) demonstrate limited control. While you attempt to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'precision,' 'accuracy,' and 'sustainable,' the overall range is somewhat restricted. To reach a higher band, focus on using more natural collocations and ensuring that words are used in their correct grammatical context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

There is a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but the essay contains frequent grammatical errors. Common issues include subject-verb agreement ('many scientific innovation makes'), article usage ('to nature' instead of 'in nature'), and awkward phrasing ('there are so many scientific research has already done'). Punctuation is generally functional, but the frequency of errors in basic sentence construction is noticeable. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they occur throughout the text and prevent the essay from reaching a higher band score. Focus on proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy.
