IELTS Writing Task 2 question
The most important aim of science should be to improve people’s lives. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement? Give reasons for your answers and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 8.0)
Science has played a pivotal role in shaping modern society, from transforming healthcare to revolutionising communication and transportation. Some people argue that its primary purpose should be to improve the quality of human life. I strongly agree with this view because scientific progress is most valuable when it addresses human needs, although fundamental research should also be encouraged for its long-term benefits.
The strongest argument for prioritising the improvement of people’s lives is the enormous contribution of science to medicine. Scientific discoveries have enabled doctors to prevent, diagnose and treat diseases that were once fatal. Vaccines, antibiotics, advanced surgical techniques and medical imaging have collectively increased life expectancy and reduced suffering worldwide. For example, the rapid development of vaccines during the COVID-19 pandemic demonstrated how scientific research can directly protect millions of people and allow societies to recover from a major crisis. Therefore, improving health is arguably one of the clearest ways in which science can fulfil its social purpose.
Science can also improve living standards beyond the field of medicine. Technological advances based on scientific research have made transportation safer, communication faster and access to information considerably easier. Renewable-energy research, for instance, has the potential to reduce dependence on fossil fuels while providing cleaner and more sustainable sources of energy. Similarly, innovations in agriculture can increase crop yields and help countries address food shortages. These examples show that science can tackle some of the most pressing challenges facing humanity rather than merely expanding theoretical knowledge.
However, I do not believe that every scientific investigation must have an immediate practical application. Fundamental research is often conducted without a clearly identifiable benefit, yet it can eventually produce revolutionary discoveries. Research in physics, chemistry and astronomy, for example, has frequently generated knowledge whose practical applications became apparent only decades later. The development of the internet itself was supported by earlier scientific and technological research that was not initially designed to create today's global communication network. Consequently, restricting science exclusively to projects with immediate social benefits could discourage discoveries that might transform society in the future.
In conclusion, I strongly agree that improving human lives should be the **most important aim** of science because scientific knowledge has its greatest social value when it reduces suffering, raises living standards and solves major global problems. Nevertheless, fundamental research should not be neglected, as today's seemingly abstract discoveries may become tomorrow's most important practical breakthroughs.
