IELTS Writing Task 2 question
The most important aim of science should be to improve people’s lives. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement? Give reasons for your answers and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
It is argued by some people that the main objective of scientific progress should be to improve the quality of living. Although some might disagree with this notion, but I extremely agree with this statement not only because of revolution in medical field and pharmacy but also because it provides the opportunities of employment.
There are multiple reasons associated with this development. Firstly, I believe that the improvement in science has made a revolutionary change especially in medical field. As due to scientific progress doctors are able to diagnose different types of diseases and their treatment. Take an example of South Africa where Finance Minister said that 40 percent of overall budget will be utilized for scientific research annually. Hence, scientific research is significantly beneficial for medical fields.
Secondly, apart from above mentioned advantage, there is another major benefit of science that is pharmacy. As science played a vital role in the medicine industry. For instance, during pandemic diseases of Corona in the year or 2020, doctors put valuable efforts for making vaccination against Corona. Soon they were able to control this pandemic disease.
Finally, I believe that progress in scientific field will create opportunities for unemployed educated youngster. As fresh graduates can apply new ideas and energy in this field. It will be a positive change all over the world.
To sum up, although some might disagree with me but I believe that an objective-based science has the potential to improve living standard in medical field, pharmacy and in the field of job opportunities.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses the prompt and maintains a clear position throughout. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. While you mention medical research and employment, the arguments are brief and rely on general statements rather than deep analysis. For instance, the example regarding the South African Finance Minister is somewhat disconnected from the core argument about improving lives. To reach a higher band, ensure that each body paragraph fully explores the 'how' and 'why' of your claims, providing more substantial evidence or logical reasoning to support your position.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is logically organized into paragraphs, and there is a clear progression of ideas. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'To sum up' to guide the reader. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical or repetitive, and the connection between sentences could be smoother. For example, the phrase 'apart from above mentioned advantage' is a bit clunky. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that referencing (e.g., 'this development') is always precise will help improve the flow and cohesion of your writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'objective', 'revolutionary', and 'pandemic'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'pharmacy' used to describe the industry (which is better referred to as 'the pharmaceutical industry') and 'pandemic diseases of Corona' (which is redundant). To improve, focus on using more precise academic collocations and avoid repeating the same words. Expanding your vocabulary to include more sophisticated, topic-specific terminology will help you achieve a higher score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'but I extremely agree' (incorrect adverb placement and informal phrasing) and 'As due to scientific progress' (incorrect sentence fragment). Additionally, there are minor issues with articles and prepositions throughout the text. To improve, focus on reducing these frequent errors and ensuring that your complex sentences are constructed accurately. Proofreading for subject-verb agreement and correct sentence boundaries will significantly enhance your grammatical accuracy.
