IELTS Writing Task 2 question
The most important aim of science should be to improve people’s lives. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement? Give reasons for your answers and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 7.5)
I strongly agree that the primary purpose of science should be to improve people's lives. Scientific discoveries and technological advancements have played a crucial role in enhancing human well-being, solving global problems, and increasing the overall quality of life. Although science also contributes to expanding knowledge and understanding the universe, its greatest value lies in its practical benefits to humanity.
One of the most significant contributions of science is in the field of healthcare. Scientific research has led to the development of vaccines, medicines, and advanced medical equipment, which have saved millions of lives worldwide. For example, during the COVID-19 pandemic, scientists developed effective vaccines in a remarkably short period, helping to reduce mortality rates and control the spread of the virus. Without scientific progress, many diseases that are now treatable would continue to threaten human life.
Furthermore, science has greatly improved living standards through technological innovation. Advances in transportation, communication, and agriculture have made people's lives more convenient and productive. For instance, the internet and smartphones have transformed the way people communicate, learn, and work. Similarly, scientific developments in agriculture have increased food production, helping to address hunger and support growing populations.
However, some people argue that the pursuit of knowledge should be considered an important goal of science, even if it does not provide immediate practical benefits. I agree that scientific exploration, such as space research or the study of fundamental physics, is valuable because it expands human understanding and can lead to unexpected breakthroughs in the future. Nevertheless, these pursuits should ultimately contribute to the welfare and progress of society.
In conclusion, I strongly believe that improving people's lives should remain the foremost objective of science. While the pursuit of knowledge is important, scientific advancements achieve their greatest significance when they help solve real-world problems and enhance human well-being.
