IELTS Writing Task 2 question
The most important aim of science should be to improve people’s lives. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement? Give reasons for your answers and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 7.5)
Science has played a crucial role in the development of modern society. Some people believe that its primary purpose should be to improve human life. I strongly agree with this view because scientific progress has the greatest value when it helps people live healthier, safer and more comfortable lives.
One major way in which science improves people's lives is through advances in healthcare. Scientific research has led to the development of vaccines, medicines and medical technologies that save millions of lives every year. For example, vaccines have helped control many deadly diseases, while modern diagnostic tools allow doctors to detect illnesses at an early stage. As a result, life expectancy has increased significantly in many countries. These achievements demonstrate how science directly benefits society.
In addition, science contributes to better living standards by making everyday life easier and more efficient. Technological innovations such as smartphones, the internet and modern transportation systems have transformed communication, education and business. People can now access information instantly, work remotely and travel more conveniently than ever before. These developments have increased productivity and improved the quality of life for countless individuals.
However, some argue that science should also focus on expanding human knowledge, even when there are no immediate practical benefits. Research in fields such as astronomy and theoretical physics may not directly improve daily life, but it often leads to discoveries that benefit society in the long term. Nevertheless, I believe that the ultimate justification for scientific research is its potential to contribute to human well-being, whether directly or indirectly.
In conclusion, I strongly agree that improving people's lives should be the most important goal of science. Although the pursuit of knowledge is valuable, scientific progress is most meaningful when it helps solve real-world problems and enhances the quality of life for humanity.
