IELTS Writing Task 2 question
The most important aim of science should be to improve people’s lives. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement? Give reasons for your answers and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The sole purpose or the most important aim of science is for the betterment or improvement of people's lives. I agree fully to this statement. Science has improved people's lives in countless ways, from the invention of the light bulb in the era of Edison to the era of the telephone, which revolutionised modern communication, leading to widespread access to various facilities which wouldn't have been possible.
Similarly, the invention of electricity laid the very fundamental, or in simple terms, the founding pillar of everything that we use in our daily lives. Starting from the cars, digital items and electronic items which make life easier are all due to the contribution of science.
For today's aspect, the invention of artificial intelligence, or in short form, AI, has made it possible to do different things with deadly precision, leaving less room for error, contributing to better decision-making in fields where a slight error can make a big difference, such as defence, aviation, the field of research and much more.
From my perspective, science is playing a major factor in making a difference not only in improving lives but also in upgrading them to live a better future. Like everything, it also harbours some flaws, but the ratio of pros outweighs that of the cons, and as a famous scientist once quoted, "Curiosity is the mother of all inventions," which, according to my view or perspective, is the very definition and working of science in our lives, leading us to a better future by making day-to-day life easier.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
You have clearly stated your position in the introduction and maintained it throughout the essay. You address the prompt by providing examples such as the light bulb, the telephone, and artificial intelligence to support your argument. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat superficial. For instance, while you mention AI and its precision in fields like aviation, you do not fully explore the 'extent' of your agreement or consider potential counter-arguments, which is necessary for a higher band score. The essay is a bit repetitive in its focus on 'making life easier' rather than exploring the broader implications of science as a tool for human betterment.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organised into clear paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your argument. You use some cohesive devices like 'Similarly' and 'For today's aspect' to link ideas. However, the transition between paragraphs is occasionally mechanical, and some sentences feel disjointed. For example, the jump from the invention of electricity to the mention of cars and digital items is a bit abrupt. The use of referencing is generally clear, but the overall flow could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words to show more sophisticated relationships between your arguments and examples.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'revolutionised', 'fundamental', and 'deadly precision'. However, there is a tendency to use wordy or redundant phrases, such as 'or in simple terms' and 'or in short form', which detracts from the academic tone. Some word choices are slightly imprecise, such as 'For today's aspect', which is not a standard collocation. To improve, focus on using more precise academic vocabulary and avoiding unnecessary explanations of common abbreviations like AI, which are widely understood in this context.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is generally clear, there are some grammatical inaccuracies. For example, 'I agree fully to this statement' should be 'I fully agree with this statement'. Additionally, some sentences are slightly clunky, such as 'leading to widespread access to various facilities which wouldn't have been possible', which lacks a clear object. You have good control over basic punctuation, but the complexity of your sentence structures is limited. Increasing the variety of subordinate clauses and ensuring subject-verb agreement will help elevate your score in this criterion.
