Student answer (Band 4.5)

In early days, people didn't aware from many things that could help to improve their lives. As time goes by, the world has become a global village. Today, science changes the nature of people . there are many advantages and disadvantages of science. The most important aim of should be to improve people's lives because everyone has time for anyone. Just because of being busy in their lives. I think science should bring people together. This way people spend their time in enjoyments, adventures and laughing together. Once upon a time, people lives together, eat together, walked around together and enjoyed their lives but today there is nothing like that. everyone is busy in his life. No one has time for anybody and people become rude and cold. In my opinion, science is a good thing but science has to bring people together. Like in past days, anybody who fell ill and everyone came and helped him. But today no has any concern with anybody. People used to help but today there is nothing like that. I agree that mobiles phones helps bring people together but not like that time. Everyone use mobiles to play games, watching series and for working. I think people has to make little time to spend together. In conclusion, science should has to bring people together just like the past days. With that, they become more healthy, active, and happy.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.0

The response fails to address the prompt effectively. The task asks for an evaluation of whether the primary aim of science should be to improve human lives; however, the essay focuses almost exclusively on the loss of social connection and the negative impact of modern technology on interpersonal relationships. The argument is tangential and does not engage with the core topic of scientific purpose. Furthermore, the essay is under the 250-word minimum, which significantly limits the development of any coherent position. The ideas are repetitive and lack the necessary depth or relevant examples required for an academic task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay lacks a clear structure. There is no introduction or conclusion that effectively frames the argument. The text is presented as a single block of writing, which makes it difficult to follow the progression of ideas. While there are some attempts at cohesive devices, such as 'In conclusion' and 'As time goes by', they are used mechanically and do not effectively link the ideas. The transition between the topic of science and the discussion of social habits is abrupt and confusing, leading to a lack of logical flow throughout the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is very basic and repetitive. Phrases like 'people lives together', 'everyone is busy in his life', and 'science is a good thing' demonstrate a limited range that is insufficient for an academic essay. There is no attempt to use topic-specific vocabulary related to science, technology, or societal progress. Word choice is often inaccurate, such as 'didn't aware from' instead of 'were not aware of'. The lack of variety and the frequent misuse of common words prevent the expression of more complex ideas.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.5

The essay contains frequent grammatical errors that often impede clarity. There are consistent issues with subject-verb agreement ('people lives', 'everyone use', 'science should has'), tense usage, and sentence construction. Many sentences are fragmented or run-on, such as 'Just because of being busy in their lives.' The lack of control over basic sentence structures and punctuation makes the text difficult to read. There is no evidence of complex sentence structures, and the high frequency of errors is a major barrier to effective communication.
