Student answer (Band 5.5)

The most essential goal of science should be to improve people's lives. This will discuss why I agree that aim of science should be to improve people lives.

On the first hand, the science improves the medical and health science technology that diseases that are hard to cure in the past years are now easily be treated with the help of medical science technology. To cure many wounds, a lot of medicines, vaccines and equipment has been produced and developed. People die even due to minor wound because there is no proper treatment like vaccines, antibiotics are available. In the battle many soldier lost their lives due to lack of technology and even lost their battle. For example, in the past cancer treatment is not available, but now doctors developed a fully planned treatment to cure cancer.

On the other hand, science improved the way of communication, transportation, agriculture and safety. As compared to past, nowadays we are living in the modern era of science because of the technology. In the ancient times, people faced difficulty of communicated with each other. It takes a lot of days to send and receive post to communicated. Same with the transportation, people used some animals like, donkeys, horses and camel to travel with takes days to reached them to their destinations. In this era in which we are living is the era of science and technology. For example, smartphones, vehicles, airplanes and ships are developed with the help of science.

In conclusion, I strongly agree that primary goal of science is to improve people's lives. Because scientific technology improved human lives, safety and communication.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses the prompt by taking a clear position in favor of the statement. The ideas are relevant, focusing on medical advancements and technological progress in communication and transport. However, the development is somewhat limited. While the points are clear, they lack depth and specific, well-explained examples. For instance, the mention of cancer treatment is a good start but is not fully elaborated upon to demonstrate the impact on human lives. The conclusion is brief and merely restates the introduction without adding a final thought. To improve, you should aim to expand your supporting arguments with more detailed explanations and nuanced examples.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. There is a basic attempt at using cohesive devices such as 'On the first hand', 'On the other hand', and 'In conclusion'. However, some of these are used incorrectly or sound unnatural, such as 'On the first hand' (should be 'On the one hand'). The progression of ideas is generally clear, but the flow between sentences can be somewhat mechanical. Referencing is occasionally unclear, and the transition between ideas could be smoother to improve the overall readability of the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task but remains quite basic and repetitive. You rely on general terms like 'science', 'technology', and 'things'. There are several instances of awkward phrasing and word choice errors, such as 'science improves the medical and health science technology' and 'it takes a lot of days to send and receive post to communicated'. To achieve a higher band, you need to incorporate a wider range of topic-specific vocabulary and demonstrate better control over collocations and word forms to express your ideas with more precision.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors throughout. Common issues include subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'a lot of medicines... has been produced'), incorrect verb tenses (e.g., 'in the past cancer treatment is not available'), and missing articles or prepositions. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to be noticeable and affect the overall fluency of the writing. Focusing on proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy and ensuring consistent verb tenses would significantly improve your score.
