Student answer (Band 6.0)

Science should mainly focus on improving the lives of human beings, by introducing the advancements in the health care , agricultural and innovative sectors. I strongly agree with this statement because these are major areas of concerns for science.

Scientists should develop new medications and machines to treat incurable diseases. For instance, thousands of people die from cancer annually, scientists can produce the medications which can cure cancer. Many people have to wait for there turn in laboratories and also it takes so much time to get a blood or other disease report . So they can help to built more efficient diagnostic machines which can provide faster results to patients.

Scientists can make improvements in agriculture sector by making insects resisting seeds, advanced machineries and introducing high yield seeds. Consequently, by increasing the production of crops the hunger problem of the world can be solved. For instance, Botanists can develop a hybrid seed which can survive on less water for its growth, which can be used in the dry regions of Africa. There are many innovations needed for the protection of environment. Researchers should try to discover new means of transport and find the ways to reduce the use of fossil fuels . It can result in reduction of harmful gases which emit from the vehicles and factories . For instance , they can develop an instrument which can store a large amount of solar energy which is adequate to run factories.

It is concluded that the welfare of humans should be the main aim of the science by providing them better health care , nutrition and clean environment.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt clearly and maintains a consistent position throughout. You have identified key areas—health, agriculture, and the environment—to support your argument. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat superficial. For instance, while you mention cancer research and agricultural innovation, the explanations remain at a general level. To reach a higher band, you should provide more nuanced analysis or specific, real-world examples rather than general statements. The conclusion is a bit brief and merely restates the introduction rather than synthesising the main points discussed in the body paragraphs.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organised with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph focuses on a distinct theme, which helps the reader follow your argument. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'For instance' and 'Consequently', to link ideas. However, the transition between sentences is sometimes mechanical, and the use of cohesive devices could be more varied to improve the flow. Additionally, the paragraphing is functional, but the final paragraph is quite short and lacks the depth expected for a concluding summary.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using topic-specific terms like 'incurable diseases', 'diagnostic machines', and 'fossil fuels'. There are some instances of slightly unnatural phrasing, such as 'wait for there turn' (should be 'their') and 'insects resisting seeds' (should be 'pest-resistant'). While you successfully convey your meaning, the vocabulary lacks the precision and sophistication required for higher bands. Expanding your range to include more academic collocations and avoiding repetitive phrasing would significantly enhance your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'help to built' (should be 'help to build') and 'gases which emit from' (should be 'gases which are emitted from'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with spacing around commas and periods. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of passive voice would improve your accuracy.
