Student answer (Band 6.0)

Globalisation has become an important part of modern society, as countries are increasingly connected through trade, technology and communication. While some people believe that globalisation brings significant benefits, others argue that it can have negative effects on countries and individuals. This essay will discuss both views before explaining why I believe that globalisation is generally beneficial.

On the one hand, globalisation provides several advantages to countries. Firstly, international trade allows nations to exchange goods and services, which can contribute to economic growth. For example, India exports medicines, textiles and IT services to many countries, generating income and creating employment opportunities. Secondly, globalisation allows people to access new technologies and ideas from other parts of the world. As a result, developing countries can adopt modern technologies and improve areas such as healthcare, education and communication. Therefore, globalisation can contribute significantly to economic and social development.

On the other hand, globalisation can also have some disadvantages. One major concern is that local businesses may struggle to compete with large international companies because these corporations often have greater financial resources and advanced technology. For instance, small local shops may lose customers when large international retail companies enter their markets. Moreover, globalisation can sometimes reduce cultural diversity because people around the world increasingly follow similar lifestyles, food trends and entertainment. Consequently, some traditional cultures and local businesses may gradually lose their importance.

In conclusion, although globalisation can create challenges for local businesses and cultural traditions, I believe that its benefits outweigh its drawbacks. International trade, technological development and the exchange of knowledge can improve economic growth and people’s quality of life when globalisation is managed effectively.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 3.0

The response is completely off-topic. The prompt explicitly asks about the aim of science (improving people's lives), but the essay discusses globalisation throughout. Because the response fails to address the specific topic provided, it cannot be assessed as a successful response to the task. While the structure follows an essay format, the content is irrelevant to the question asked. To improve, you must carefully analyse the prompt keywords—in this case, 'science' and 'improve people's lives'—and ensure your arguments directly relate to those concepts rather than using a pre-prepared template or discussing a different subject.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is well-structured with clear paragraphing and logical progression. You use cohesive devices effectively, such as 'On the one hand,' 'Firstly,' 'Moreover,' and 'In conclusion,' which guide the reader through the argument. Each paragraph has a clear central topic, and the flow of ideas is smooth. While the content is off-topic, the organisational skills demonstrated are strong. To maintain this level, ensure that the logical flow is applied to the actual topic requested in the prompt in future tasks.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary, such as 'economic growth,' 'financial resources,' 'cultural diversity,' and 'managed effectively.' The language is natural and appropriate for an academic context. There are no significant spelling or word-choice errors that impede communication. You show an ability to use topic-specific vocabulary, though it is applied to the wrong subject. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more sophisticated collocations or less common lexical items to demonstrate greater precision.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The grammar is generally accurate, with a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. You use subordinating conjunctions like 'as,' 'while,' and 'because' effectively to create complex sentences. There are very few grammatical errors, and the punctuation is handled correctly throughout the text. The control over sentence structure is consistent, and the writing is easy to follow. To improve, you could experiment with a wider variety of complex structures, such as inversion or conditional sentences, to further demonstrate your grammatical range.
