IELTS Writing Task 2 question

The most important aim of science should be to improve people’s lives. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement? Give reasons for your answers and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 8.0)

While scientific research spans a vast range of disciplines—from theoretical physics to practical engineering—the fundamental driving force behind scientific endeavor has historically been human advancement. I strongly agree that the primary objective of science should be to enhance human quality of life, as its greatest achievements have always stemmed from solving real-world challenges.

First and foremost, science plays an irreplaceable role in improving public health and safety. Advances in medical science, such as the discovery of antibiotics, the development of vaccines, and modern diagnostic technologies, have dramatically extended human life expectancy and eradicated deadly diseases. Without an overarching focus on human well-being, resources could be directed toward purely abstract theories or destructive capabilities—such as advanced weaponry—rather than technologies that save lives and alleviate suffering.

Furthermore, science addresses global crises that directly threaten human existence. Innovations in agricultural technology have multiplied food yields, feeding billions and combating starvation. Similarly, climate science and renewable energy technologies are vital in tackling environmental degradation, ensuring a sustainable planet for future generations. When scientific inquiries prioritize practical solutions, they yield directly actionable benefits that uplift living standards, particularly for vulnerable populations.

However, it is worth acknowledging that fundamental or "pure" science—driven purely by curiosity without immediate practical applications—also holds immense value. Discoveries in fields like astrophysics or quantum mechanics may not immediately improve daily life, but they often lay the foundation for unforeseen technological breakthroughs decades later.

In conclusion, while curiosity-driven research remains essential for long-term progress, the ethical imperative of science must always center on human welfare. Aligning scientific goals with the improvement of human lives ensures that knowledge serves humanity constructively rather than destructively.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The response fully addresses all parts of the prompt. You establish a clear position from the introduction and maintain it throughout the essay. The ideas are well-developed, particularly the distinction between practical applications in health and agriculture versus the long-term value of 'pure' science. You provide relevant examples, such as antibiotics and renewable energy, to support your arguments. The conclusion effectively synthesizes your position, acknowledging the nuance of the topic while reinforcing your main argument. The response is well-structured and demonstrates a sophisticated understanding of the task requirements.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the transition between the argument for practical science and the counter-argument regarding 'pure' science is smooth. You use a variety of cohesive devices effectively, such as 'First and foremost', 'Furthermore', and 'However', which guide the reader through your argument without being mechanical. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct points, and referencing is clear throughout the text. The flow of information is natural and coherent.

Lexical Resource — Band 8.0

You demonstrate a wide and flexible range of vocabulary, using sophisticated terms such as 'scientific endeavor', 'overarching focus', 'alleviate suffering', and 'ethical imperative'. The word choice is precise and appropriate for an academic context. There are no noticeable errors in collocation or spelling, and the language used is natural and fluent. You successfully incorporate less common lexical items to convey complex ideas with clarity and precision, which is characteristic of a high-level response.
