Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.0
The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 250 words, as it is only 139 words long. This significantly impacts the development of ideas, as the essay is incomplete and ends abruptly mid-sentence. While the student establishes a clear position that science should focus on improving human lives, the arguments are underdeveloped. The examples provided, such as food adulteration and the COVID-19 pandemic, are relevant but lack the necessary depth and explanation required for an academic task. To improve, the student must expand on their points with specific evidence and ensure the essay is fully completed.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay shows some attempt at logical organization, with an introduction and a body paragraph. However, the progression of ideas is hindered by the incomplete nature of the text. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'On the other hand' and 'consequently,' but they are sometimes used incorrectly or in a way that feels mechanical. Paragraphing is present, but the lack of a conclusion and the abrupt ending make the overall structure feel disjointed. To improve, the student should focus on using linking words more naturally and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear topic sentence followed by well-developed supporting points.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is limited and often inaccurate, which occasionally causes difficulty for the reader. There are several instances of incorrect word forms and collocations, such as 'beneficial of the population existence' instead of 'the benefit of the population' and 'adulterer food' instead of 'adulterated food.' The student attempts to use some topic-specific vocabulary like 'hazardous' and 'adulteration,' but the overall range is insufficient for a higher band. To improve, the student should focus on learning the correct word forms and practicing collocations in context to express ideas more precisely.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.5
The response contains frequent grammatical errors that impede communication. There are issues with subject-verb agreement ('Scientist are focusing'), article usage ('the COVID 19'), and sentence structure ('medicine for many kinds of diseases are not discover yet'). The range of structures is limited, consisting mostly of simple sentences with some errors in basic grammar. Complex structures are attempted but are often faulty, such as 'how to safe foods adulteration.' To improve, the student needs to focus on fundamental grammar rules, particularly verb tenses, pluralization, and the correct use of prepositions and articles.
