The most important aim of science should be to improve people’s lives. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement? Give reasons for your answers and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

 

Student answer (Band 7.0)

**The most important aim of science should be to improve people’s lives. To what extent do you agree or disagree?**

Science plays an important role in modern society, and many people believe that its main purpose should be to make human life better. I strongly agree with this view because scientific research has improved healthcare, technology and everyday living, although some scientific discoveries are also important for gaining knowledge.

Firstly, science has greatly improved people’s health and increased life expectancy. Scientists have developed medicines, vaccines and modern medical equipment that can prevent and treat many serious diseases. For example, vaccines have helped control diseases such as polio and measles in many parts of the world. In addition, technologies such as MRI and CT scans allow doctors to identify illnesses more accurately. Therefore, scientific research can directly protect people's lives and improve their quality of life.

Secondly, science has made everyday life easier and more convenient. Developments in computers, smartphones and the internet have changed the way people work, study and communicate. For instance, students can now attend online classes and access educational information from almost anywhere. Similarly, modern transport and communication technologies allow people to travel and communicate much faster than in the past. These developments show that science can provide practical solutions to many problems faced by society.

However, I believe that science should not focus only on immediate benefits to humans. Basic scientific research can sometimes seem unnecessary at first, but it may lead to important discoveries in the future. For example, research into space and astronomy has increased our understanding of the universe and has also contributed to the development of technologies used on Earth. Therefore, gaining knowledge is also a valuable purpose of science.

In conclusion, I strongly agree that improving people’s lives should be the most important aim of science because scientific progress can improve health, communication and living standards. Nevertheless, basic research and the search for knowledge should also be encouraged because they may provide unexpected benefits in the future.
