IELTS Writing Task 2 question
The most important aim of science should be to improve people’s lives. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement? Give reasons for your answers and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
In the modern world, science and technology have significantly advanced. It is often argued that science helps to make people's lives better. I fully agree with this statement, as its significant impact can be seen in healthcare and communication. In the subsequent paragraphs, I will discuss my views on this.
To begin with, one of the major advantages of scientific advancements is their contribution to the healthcare sector. In big cities, new hospitals have advanced technological equipment available, such as CT scans, X-rays, MRIs and ultrasound machines for diagnosis. These machines help to detect diseases early and are helpful in treatment. As a result, people live longer. For example, in the past, people struggled to get better treatment, especially in rural areas, where there were no such healthcare facilities available, and they had to commute to cities for regular medical tests. Sometimes, due to bad weather and inadequate transportation facilities, they were not able to go for check-ups. Therefore, the treatment was delayed. Nowadays, every hospital has basic amenities for treatment. Moreover, several vaccinations and medicines invented by scientists and doctors help to save millions of lives and prevent diseases during pandemics. Hence, it is evident that science plays a pivotal role in improving human lives.
In addition to this, science has overcome the challenges faced by people decades ago. They were not able to communicate with their loved ones who lived far away from them. With the help of research, scientists invented mobile phones. Over time, more advanced technologies have been introduced, such as video calling and social media platforms, which help people to stay connected with their loved ones and learn about their lives through social media stories, posts and video calls. To exemplify this, a student or working professional who lives in a foreign country can stay close to their parents and friends by communicating through video conferencing, which helps make their lives more comfortable and happy.
In conclusion, I believe that technological advancements in the field of science help to improve our lives in several ways, particularly by providing better healthcare facilities and advanced technologies such as mobile phones and social media platforms.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response addresses all parts of the prompt, clearly stating a position in the introduction and maintaining it throughout. The ideas are relevant and supported with examples, such as the role of medical technology and communication tools. However, the development is somewhat predictable and could be strengthened by exploring the potential counter-argument or the 'extent' of the statement more critically. While the arguments are logical, they remain at a somewhat general level. To reach a higher band, you should aim to provide more nuanced analysis rather than just listing benefits, perhaps by briefly acknowledging the potential downsides of scientific over-reliance to demonstrate a more sophisticated 'extent' of agreement.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central topic, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. Cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'Moreover', 'In addition to this', and 'In conclusion' are used effectively to link ideas. However, the transition between the healthcare example and the general statement about rural areas is slightly repetitive. The use of referencing is generally clear, though some sentences could be more tightly linked to improve the flow. Overall, the paragraphing is appropriate and contributes to a coherent response.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic with some precision. Phrases like 'pivotal role', 'healthcare sector', and 'technological advancements' are used correctly. There is an attempt to use less common vocabulary, though some word choices are quite standard. To improve, try to incorporate more sophisticated collocations and idiomatic expressions. For instance, instead of 'big cities', you could use 'metropolitan areas'. The vocabulary is generally accurate, and there are no spelling errors that impede communication, but the range is not yet broad enough to consistently demonstrate the flexibility required for a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. You demonstrate good control over basic grammar, and the majority of your sentences are error-free. There is a good use of relative clauses (e.g., 'who lived far away from them') and conditional-like structures. While there are no major errors that impede meaning, the range of complex structures is somewhat limited. To achieve a higher score, try to incorporate more varied sentence patterns, such as passive voice constructions or more sophisticated subordinating conjunctions, while maintaining the high level of accuracy you currently possess.
