IELTS Writing Task 2 question
The most important aim of science should be to improve people’s lives. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement? Give reasons for your answers and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
In the modern world, science and technology have advanced significantly. It is often argued that science helps to improve people's lives. I fully agree with this statement, as its significant impact can be seen in healthcare and communication. In the following paragraphs, I will discuss my views on this.
To begin with, one of the major advantages of scientific advancements is their contribution to the healthcare sector. In big cities, new hospitals have advanced technological equipment, such as CT scanners, X-rays, MRIs and ultrasound machines, which are used for diagnosis. These machines help to detect diseases at an early stage and are beneficial in providing effective treatment. As a result, people can live longer. For example, in the past, people struggled to receive better treatment, especially in rural areas, where adequate healthcare facilities were often unavailable. Consequently, they had to travel to cities for regular medical tests. Sometimes, due to bad weather and inadequate transportation facilities, they were unable to go for check-ups. Therefore, their treatment was delayed. Nowadays, every hospital has basic amenities for treatment. Moreover, several vaccinations and medicines developed by scientists and doctors help to prevent diseases and save millions of lives during pandemics. Hence, it is evident that science plays a pivotal role in improving human lives.
In addition to this, science has overcome the challenges faced by people decades ago. In the past, people were unable to communicate with their loved ones who lived far away from them. With the help of scientific research, scientists invented mobile phones. Over time, more advanced technologies have been introduced, such as video calling and social media platforms, which help people to stay connected with their loved ones and learn about their lives through social media stories, posts and video calls. To exemplify this, a student or working professional who lives in a foreign country can stay connected with their parents and friends through video conferencing. This allows them to maintain close relationships despite the physical distance and makes their lives more comfortable and happy.
In conclusion, I believe that technological advancements in the field of science help to improve our lives in several ways, particularly by providing better healthcare facilities and introducing advanced technologies such as mobile phones and social media platforms.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
You have addressed all parts of the prompt, clearly stating your agreement and supporting it with relevant examples from healthcare and communication. Your position is consistent throughout the essay. The ideas are well-developed, particularly the healthcare section, which provides a logical progression from the problem (lack of access) to the solution (technological advancements). To reach a higher band, ensure you explore the 'extent' of your agreement more deeply; for instance, you could briefly acknowledge potential counter-arguments or ethical considerations regarding science to demonstrate a more nuanced and critical perspective on the topic.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use cohesive devices effectively, such as 'To begin with,' 'Consequently,' and 'In addition to this,' which guide the reader through your arguments. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. The progression of ideas is smooth, and referencing is clear throughout. To improve, try to vary your linking phrases slightly more to avoid a somewhat formulaic structure, and ensure that the transition between the two main body paragraphs feels more integrated rather than just a list of points.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for an academic essay, such as 'pivotal role,' 'adequate healthcare facilities,' and 'technological advancements.' The language is generally precise and conveys your meaning clearly. However, the vocabulary is somewhat standard. To achieve a higher band, incorporate more sophisticated, less common lexical items and collocations. For example, instead of 'big cities,' you could use 'metropolitan areas,' and instead of 'help to improve,' you might use 'facilitate the enhancement of.' Your spelling is accurate throughout the text.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most of your sentences are error-free, and your control of punctuation is good. You successfully employ complex structures, such as 'In the past, people were unable to communicate with their loved ones who lived far away from them.' While your grammar is generally strong, it lacks the consistent 'wide range' of complex structures required for the highest bands. Ensure you continue to practice using a variety of subordinate clauses and passive voice constructions to add further sophistication to your writing.
