Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response addresses the prompt by expressing a clear position in favor of science improving lives. However, the development of ideas is limited. The arguments provided, such as the mention of construction machinery or the lightbulb, are somewhat superficial and lack depth. The essay tends to list examples rather than exploring the extent to which science should focus on improving lives versus other potential aims (e.g., pure discovery or environmental preservation). The conclusion is repetitive and does not synthesize the arguments effectively. To reach a higher band, you should provide more nuanced analysis and ensure that each paragraph contributes to a cohesive argument rather than just stating general facts.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay is organized into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is mechanical and sometimes inaccurate. For example, the transition 'FROM MY PRESPECTIVE' is used to introduce a general fact rather than a personal viewpoint. Referencing is occasionally unclear, and the flow between sentences feels disjointed. The logical progression of ideas is hindered by the lack of sophisticated linking words. To improve, focus on using a wider variety of transition signals (e.g., 'furthermore', 'consequently', 'in contrast') and ensure that each sentence logically follows the previous one to create a smoother narrative flow.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is limited and repetitive, relying on basic terms like 'big', 'great', and 'good'. There are several spelling errors, such as 'PEACEFULL', 'ENVOLVED', 'MACHENARIES', 'PRESPECTIVE', and 'DISCOVEIRES'. The use of 'JCB' is too specific and informal for an academic essay. While the meaning is generally clear, the lack of precision and the frequent spelling mistakes restrict the score. To improve, you should expand your vocabulary to include more academic collocations and synonyms, and pay closer attention to the spelling of common words used in your writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The essay relies heavily on simple sentence structures. While there are attempts at complex sentences, they are often marred by grammatical errors, such as 'There are many huge air plane which travels' (subject-verb agreement) and 'without natural light' (awkward phrasing). Punctuation is inconsistent, particularly with the use of spaces before commas and periods. The frequent errors in tense and pluralization (e.g., 'many great scientist') indicate a lack of control over basic grammar. To improve, focus on mastering subject-verb agreement, pluralization, and the correct use of articles, while also practicing the construction of more complex, error-free sentences.
