Student answer (Band 6.0)
In recent years, many people believe that the most important aim of science should be to improve people's lives. I partially agree with this view because by focusing on improving people's lives help an individual to save a huge amount of time and creation of various effective medical treatments. However, at the same time, excessive focus may negatively affect the environment and animal's habitat.
Firstly, an important aim of science to improve people's lives help to create the innovative technologies that save a large amount of time. This is because ancestors of today's generation spent a large amount of time to complete a particular task, but technology helps to complete that task in a least amount of time. For example, an individual of earlier years spent many hours for traveling from one location to another. However, today various modes of transportation are created that usually take a minimum time to reach their destination. Secondly, this view provides medical advancements. This can help to create effective medicines of various diseases. There are various serious diseases in today's world. Science helps experts to know the source of the diseases and to create advance medical treatments against various diseases.
On the other hand, excessive focus may have some disadvantages such as environmental effects. If scientists focus on human convenience, it may result in the technologies that affect the environment. For instance, industries release a huge amount of toxic gas that create air pollution and negatively affects the climate. Additionally, focusing towards human well being can affect the animal's habitat. However, a large number of power plants and industries require a large area of land. Due to this, forests are destroyed to provide a way for industries, which increases the risk of endangered species.
In conclusion, I partially agree that the most important aim of science should be to improve people's lives. A balanced approach works best, where improving people's lives remain priority, but at the same time researchers should consider the negative aspects towards the environment and animal's habitat.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the prompt and maintains a clear position throughout. The ideas are relevant, such as the discussion on time-saving technology and medical advancements, balanced against environmental concerns. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat repetitive. For instance, the discussion on 'time' and 'medical treatments' could be more deeply explored with more specific examples rather than general statements. The conclusion effectively summarizes the position. To reach a higher band, ensure that the supporting arguments are more distinct and fully elaborated rather than relying on generalized statements about 'ancestors' or 'various diseases'.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the benefits and drawbacks. Cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', 'On the other hand', and 'In conclusion' are used to guide the reader. However, the flow within paragraphs is sometimes mechanical, and some transitions feel slightly forced. For example, the sentence 'This is because ancestors of today's generation spent a large amount of time to complete a particular task' is a bit clunky. Improving the variety of linking phrases would enhance the overall flow.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The range of vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the student to express ideas clearly. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'innovative technologies' and 'endangered species'. However, there are instances of imprecise word choice and minor collocation errors, such as 'focusing towards human well being' (should be 'focusing on') and 'provide a way for industries' (should be 'make way for'). While these errors do not impede communication, they limit the score. Using more precise academic collocations would help elevate the lexical range.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement and article usage, such as 'many people believe' (correct) but 'by focusing on improving people's lives help an individual' (incorrect structure) and 'animal's habitat' (should be plural 'animals' habitats'). Additionally, there are issues with prepositions and pluralization throughout the text. While the student attempts complex sentences, these often contain errors that slightly distract the reader. Focusing on proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy would significantly improve the score.
