Student answer (Band 5.5)

The most important purpose of science should be to enhance people's lives. I partially agree with this statement as technology both has positive and negative impacts. This essay will cover both aspects positively and negatively.

On the one hand, science and innovation bring ease to everyone's life such as travelling, communication, health services and bringing individuals closer to one another. Science made time consuming tasks to be completed quickly. For example, in the past, travelling was too much hard and needed days or months to complete but due to the advance era it is made easier. It brought people closer enough to each other internationally with the help of a cellphone. It has also improved academic efforts such as Artificial Intelligence, students can write their preferred tasks like assignments and research.

On the other hand, it also has brought some negative aspects. Firstly, It brought people closer to one another internationally but created a space between people under one roof. Nowadays, in homes everyone is busy is mobile phone, parents did not have time for their children just scrolling social media. Additionally, I think that it did not improved individuals lives but made life boring. For instance, in the past people spend a lot of time setting with each other especially children liked to sit with their elders. In contrast, everyone is busy in their own responsibilities and also children did not like to sit and spend time with parents and so on.

In conclusion, It is true that science and technology improved and enhanced life and made it easier of everyone but it also bring some negative affects on society and environment.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses the prompt by discussing both the positive and negative impacts of science. However, the position is somewhat underdeveloped. While you state you 'partially agree', the essay focuses more on listing pros and cons rather than arguing to what extent science should prioritize improving lives. To reach a higher band, you need to synthesize your arguments more clearly to support your stance. For instance, you mention that science makes life 'boring' and creates distance, but this point could be better linked back to the core question of whether the 'most important aim' of science is truly to improve lives or if other goals, such as pure discovery, are equally valid.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organized into clear paragraphs, and there is a logical progression from the introduction to the body paragraphs and conclusion. You use basic cohesive devices like 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'Firstly'. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes mechanical, and some transitions are repetitive. For example, the transition between the discussion of mobile phones and the impact on family time could be smoother. Additionally, the conclusion is quite brief and does not fully summarize the main arguments presented in the body paragraphs, which limits the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'innovation', 'artificial intelligence', and 'internationally'. However, there are several instances of awkward word choices and minor errors, such as 'travelling was too much hard' (should be 'very difficult') and 'did not improved' (should be 'did not improve'). The vocabulary is generally functional but lacks the precision and sophistication required for higher bands. To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and avoiding repetitive phrasing like 'brought people closer' and 'busy in'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader. Examples include 'science made time consuming tasks to be completed' (should be 'science has allowed time-consuming tasks to be completed'), 'everyone is busy is mobile phone' (should be 'busy on their mobile phones'), and 'did not like to sit' (should be 'do not like to sit'). These errors in tense consistency and preposition usage indicate a need for more careful proofreading and a better grasp of complex sentence construction.
