Science has played a fundamental role in shaping modern society, from transforming healthcare to revolutionising communication and transportation. While some argue that the primary purpose of scientific research should be to improve people's quality of life, others may contend that science should pursue knowledge regardless of its immediate practical benefits. **I strongly agree that improving human lives should be the principal aim of science, although fundamental research should also be encouraged because it can produce valuable discoveries in the long term.**
One compelling reason for prioritising human well-being is that scientific advances can address some of society's most pressing problems. In the field of medicine, for instance, research has resulted in vaccines, effective treatments and sophisticated diagnostic technologies that have significantly increased life expectancy and reduced mortality rates. Similarly, developments in agricultural science have enabled farmers to produce greater quantities of food using fewer resources, helping to address food insecurity in many parts of the world. These examples demonstrate that science is most valuable when its discoveries can be translated into tangible improvements in people's lives.
Another important benefit of human-centred scientific research is its ability to improve living standards beyond healthcare and food production. Advances in information technology have made communication faster and more accessible, while innovations in renewable energy can help societies reduce their dependence on fossil fuels and mitigate environmental damage. For example, the development of solar and wind technologies has created cleaner alternatives to conventional energy sources. Such innovations not only make everyday life more convenient but can also contribute to a safer and more sustainable future.
However, it would be misguided to suggest that every scientific endeavour must have an immediate practical application. **Basic research**, which is primarily concerned with expanding human knowledge, often produces discoveries whose practical value becomes apparent only decades later. Research into the fundamental properties of matter, for example, has contributed indirectly to technologies that are now indispensable in modern life. Therefore, although improving people's lives should be the overarching objective of science, researchers should retain sufficient freedom to investigate questions whose benefits are not immediately apparent.
