Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 250 words, which significantly impacts the development of ideas. While you state your position clearly in the introduction, the arguments are underdeveloped. The example regarding solar panels is relevant but lacks a broader discussion on the role of science in other fields, such as medicine or space exploration, to fully address the 'extent' of the prompt. Because the essay is only 199 words, the depth of analysis is insufficient to reach a higher band. To improve, ensure you provide a more comprehensive exploration of the topic with multiple supporting points.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay lacks a clear structure. There is no formal conclusion, and the paragraphing is disjointed. While you use some cohesive devices like 'Additionally' and 'For example', the flow between sentences is often interrupted by grammatical errors and awkward phrasing. The progression of ideas is somewhat repetitive, particularly in the second paragraph where the focus on electricity bills dominates the entire argument. To improve, focus on using clear topic sentences for each paragraph and ensure that your ideas transition logically from one to the next, ending with a summary that reinforces your main argument.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is quite basic and repetitive. You frequently use simple terms like 'big', 'good', and 'help', which limits your ability to express complex ideas. There are also issues with word formation and collocation, such as 'technology genre' and 'cost electricity bills'. To achieve a higher band, you should aim to incorporate more precise academic vocabulary and collocations. For instance, instead of saying 'developed their lives', you could use 'enhanced their quality of life'. Expanding your range of synonyms and learning how to use them in context will significantly improve your score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The essay contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede communication. There are issues with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'The Most Important aim... should be improve'), incorrect verb tenses, and missing articles. Sentence structures are largely simple, and there is a lack of complex sentence forms. Punctuation is also inconsistent, with some sentences running on or lacking necessary commas. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence construction, specifically subject-verb agreement and the correct use of infinitives. Practicing the use of complex structures, such as relative clauses or conditional sentences, will also help you demonstrate a wider grammatical range.
