The most important aim of science should be to improve people’s lives. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement? Give reasons for your answers and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Science is a giant umbrella that covers the vast expanse of knowledge. It has primarily been used in various ways for the betterment of people’s lives, such as advancements in the health sector and the invention of innumerable machines and robots that aid us in our daily lives. This essay will provide insight as to why I wholeheartedly agree with the notion that science should be used for improving people’s living standards.
In recent years, due to profound research into the human body by scientists, there have been giant leaps in the vast availability of treatments and cures being discovered for a large number of previously incurable diseases. For instance, the treatment and management of the increasingly prevalent disease known as diabetes have become widely accessible and very cost-effective. This is made possible due to the constant advancements in the field of science.
Furthermore, with the advent of various machines and robots, the daily menial and difficult tasks have become easier and more efficient to perform. For example, the invention of the modern car has provided man with luxuries that were unimaginable a couple of centuries ago. Another example would be the introduction of the smartphone, which has made long-distance communication hassle-free and efficient. This would not be achievable without the use of science.
In conclusion, science has allowed us to become healthier and live more efficiently due to the invention of modern medicines and many advanced machines and gadgets. Thus, taking into consideration the benefits that science has provided for humans, I fully agree that the primary focus of scientists should be improving our quality of life.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response addresses all parts of the prompt, clearly stating a position in the introduction and maintaining it throughout. The ideas are relevant, focusing on health and technological convenience as evidence for the importance of science. However, the essay tends to over-generalize and lacks a counter-argument or a more nuanced exploration of the 'extent' of the agreement. While the arguments are logical, they could be further extended with more specific examples or a deeper analysis of the potential downsides of science to demonstrate a more sophisticated level of critical thinking required for higher bands.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. Cohesive devices such as 'For instance', 'Furthermore', and 'In conclusion' are used effectively to link sentences and paragraphs. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the flow of information is smooth. To reach a higher band, the student could vary the cohesive devices further and ensure that the transition between the two body paragraphs is slightly more sophisticated.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is adequate and generally accurate, allowing for clear communication. Phrases like 'vast expanse of knowledge', 'profound research', and 'increasingly prevalent' show a good attempt at using less common vocabulary. However, there is some repetition of basic words like 'science' and 'invention'. The range is sufficient for the task, but it lacks the precision and flexibility required for a higher band. Incorporating more topic-specific collocations and avoiding repetitive phrasing would enhance the lexical quality.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The essay demonstrates a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are error-free, and the grammar is generally controlled. There are no major errors that impede communication. However, the range of complex structures is somewhat limited; the essay relies heavily on standard 'subject-verb-object' patterns. To improve, the student should incorporate a wider variety of subordinate clauses, passive voice constructions, or conditional sentences to demonstrate greater grammatical flexibility and control.
