IELTS Writing Task 2 question

The most important aim of science should be to improve people’s lives. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement? Give reasons for your answers and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 7.5)

Science has become an important part of modern life, and it has helped people in many different ways. Some people believe that the main aim of science should be to improve people’s lives. I agree with this statement to a large extent, although I believe that science should also focus on increasing our knowledge about the world.

Firstly, improving human life should be one of the main goals of science because scientific discoveries can solve serious problems. For example, medical science has developed vaccines and treatments for many dangerous diseases. In the past, illnesses such as tuberculosis and smallpox caused millions of deaths, but scientific research has helped to control or even eliminate some of them. Similarly, modern technology has made communication and transportation much easier. People can now communicate with someone in another country within seconds using smartphones and the internet.

Another reason why science should focus on people’s lives is that it can help solve environmental problems. Scientists are developing renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power, which can reduce pollution and dependence on fossil fuels. In addition, research into climate change can help governments and individuals make better decisions about protecting the environment. These developments can improve the quality of life for both present and future generations.

However, I do not think that every scientific study needs to have an immediate benefit for people. Some scientists conduct research simply to understand how the universe, animals or the human body works. For instance, research into space may not directly improve our daily lives, but it can increase our knowledge and may lead to useful discoveries in the future. Therefore, basic scientific research is also valuable.

In conclusion, I strongly agree that improving people’s lives should be one of the most important aims of science. Nevertheless, science should not only focus on immediate practical benefits because basic research and gaining knowledge are also important for the future.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response fully addresses all parts of the prompt. You have taken a clear position, agreeing with the statement while providing a nuanced counter-argument regarding the importance of basic research. The ideas are well-developed and supported with relevant examples, such as medical advancements like vaccines and the role of renewable energy in environmental protection. The structure is logical, and the argument is extended sufficiently to meet the requirements of the task. You have maintained a consistent focus on the prompt throughout the essay, ensuring that your position is clear to the reader from the introduction to the conclusion.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, starting with a clear topic sentence. You have used a variety of cohesive devices effectively, such as 'Firstly', 'Similarly', 'In addition', and 'Nevertheless', which help guide the reader through your argument. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the transition between the main argument and the concession in the fourth paragraph is smooth. The referencing is clear, and the overall structure contributes to a coherent and easy-to-follow response.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic with precision. You use topic-specific terms such as 'scientific discoveries', 'renewable energy sources', 'fossil fuels', and 'basic scientific research' appropriately. While the vocabulary is accurate and fits the context well, it remains somewhat standard. To reach a higher band, you could incorporate more sophisticated or less common collocations and idiomatic expressions. However, the current range is flexible enough to convey your ideas clearly and effectively without any noticeable errors in word choice or collocation.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

The essay displays a good variety of complex sentence structures, such as the use of conditional clauses and subordinate clauses (e.g., 'although I believe that...', 'which can reduce pollution...'). The majority of your sentences are error-free, and your control over punctuation and grammar is strong. There are no significant errors that impede communication. To improve further, you could experiment with a wider range of advanced grammatical structures, such as inversion or more complex passive constructions, to demonstrate even greater flexibility in your writing.
