IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Undoubtedly, technology is indispensable to make human's lives easy with its new inventions and helped us to evolve from stone age to this modern era but I beleive improvement of human's lives should not be the only objective of science, whereas, there are many more aspects, which should be covered by the knowledge of modern science and technology. In this essay, I will provide insights to those aims and solid reasons to prove, why they are also integral.

First of all, the primary aim of the science should be to make our home planet safe. For instance, due to unauthorized actions of humans i.e., excessive use of plastic bags, uncontrolled carbon emissions by joint processing plants such as cement and fertilizers manufacturing firms etc, have put our earth in dangour by promoting green house effect and dramatic increase in CO2 layers, which resulted in unnecessary temprature rise and extreme whether changes in the recent few years. First and main objective of Science should be to mitigate these effects. Otherwise we will be no more live on earth in the few years, so our improved and easy lives would have no meaning.

Furthermore, history has revealed that most of the innovations happened while experimenting new things, not to improve human's lives but to feed our curiosity. For example, we invented electricity, while understanding that how atoms behave and what is inside it, which made our life full of ease. So if technology works on every aspect of life, it would be better to get advance in it, which will lead us to more discoveries, inventions and innovations.

To conclude, I would just say that I completely oppose that improvement of people's lives should be the primary objective of science but scope of science should be as much diverse as possible, which will enable us to discover more aspects of this universe.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt by taking a clear position that science should have a broader scope than just improving human lives. The ideas are relevant, particularly the focus on environmental protection and scientific curiosity. However, the development is somewhat uneven. The argument regarding environmental protection is well-supported with examples, but the second body paragraph concerning curiosity is less clearly linked to the prompt's core question. While the position is consistent, the essay would benefit from more nuanced exploration of how these aims might conflict or coexist with the goal of improving human lives to reach a higher band.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. Cohesive devices such as 'First of all', 'Furthermore', and 'To conclude' are used to guide the reader. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and there are minor issues with referencing and sentence-level flow, such as the awkward phrasing in the opening sentence. The progression of ideas is generally clear, but the connection between the introduction and the subsequent arguments could be smoother to ensure a more cohesive overall structure.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their ideas clearly. There are attempts to use less common vocabulary, such as 'indispensable', 'mitigate', and 'unauthorized actions'. However, there are several spelling errors ('dangour', 'temprature', 'whether' instead of 'weather') and some awkward collocations ('CO2 layers', 'feed our curiosity'). While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise word choice and better proofreading to achieve a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There is a good attempt at using complex sentences, but these are often marred by grammatical errors. For instance, there are issues with article usage ('the stone age'), pluralization ('human's lives' should be 'human lives'), and run-on sentences. Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with comma usage. While the meaning is generally clear, the frequency of these errors prevents the writing from reaching a higher band. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and correct article usage would significantly improve the accuracy of the writing.
