IELTS Writing Task 2 question

The most important aim of science should be to improve people’s lives. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement? Give reasons for your answers and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The most important goal of science developments must be the betterment of people's well-being. I strongly agree with it. Otherwise, I don't find any other purpose of science if its priority is not to benefit the human being in any way.

I believe that science started existing with the first conscious beings. The early humans evolved the methods of hunting and constructing shelters. I consider it science. Science continuously evolved as humans did. People's lives got better over the time. From healthcare to infrastructures, it has been science and it immensely benefited people. The data shows that humans are healthier and happier than ever before.

With the modern developments in the field of science, the world's major problems like hunger and illness can be overcame.

In my case, I took therapy sessions for 2-3 years and it significantly improved my life. The methods of therapy are indeed based on science.

In conclusion, Humans well-being and prosperity has always been and should always be the priority for the science.

If the more people have a better life, the more people will play their part in innovation and research.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 250 words, reaching only 187 words. This significantly impacts the development of ideas. While you clearly state your position, the arguments are underdeveloped. For instance, the historical perspective on science is too brief, and the personal example regarding therapy is not sufficiently linked to the broader philosophical question of whether science's 'most important' aim should be human well-being. To achieve a higher band, you must expand on your points with more detailed explanations, counter-arguments, and specific examples to fully explore the prompt's implications.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organised into short paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the progression of your argument. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and limited. Transitions between sentences are often abrupt, such as the jump between the historical overview and the mention of modern problems. To improve, you should use a wider variety of linking words and phrases (e.g., 'furthermore', 'consequently', 'in contrast') to create a smoother flow between your ideas and to better connect your supporting evidence to your main thesis.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

Your vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, but it lacks the range and precision required for higher bands. You rely on simple, repetitive phrasing such as 'betterment of people's well-being' and 'science evolved'. While your meaning is clear, there is little evidence of less common lexical items or sophisticated collocations. To improve, try to incorporate more academic vocabulary related to the topic, such as 'technological advancement', 'societal progress', or 'ethical implications', and ensure you use them accurately within the context of your arguments.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are recurring errors that affect the quality of the writing. For example, 'can be overcame' should be 'can be overcome' (passive voice error), and 'Humans well-being' should be 'Human well-being'. Additionally, some sentences are slightly awkward, such as 'I don't find any other purpose of science if its priority is not to benefit the human being'. Increasing the variety of complex structures while focusing on subject-verb agreement and correct verb forms will help improve your score in this area.
