IELTS Writing Task 2 question
The most important aim of science should be to improve people’s lives. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement? Give reasons for your answers and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
In recent years, the aim of science has become a widely debated issue, while there are many valid arguments in the favor as well as against this opinion, i firmly believe that aim of science should be to improve people's lives mainly because multiple advancements in the field of science can provide great career opportunities and better health treatments.
The primary reason for agreeing with this view is that important aim of science should be to provide more career opportunities for everyone. This is mainly because science is progressing day by day and also inventing new things. As a result, this will provide us more fields of studies as well as enhance your career opportunities. For example, because of scientific advancements in space science, NASA, the American Space Agency provides different career opportunities for science students.
Another important viewpoint is that science is discovering a lot of new treatments of complex diseases. This is because science provides people a healthy life introducing accurate treatments. This has lead to improvement in the health of people as well as better cure of their diseases. For example, in 2019, an unexpected virus by the name of COVID was spreading. This virus affected a lot of individuals' health. At that time, science discovered the treatment of this dangerous disease. This discovery helped people in their treatment. Consequently, this argument also supports my view that science's main aim should be improving people's lives.
In conclusion, i firmly agree with this view that the main aim of science should be to enhance people's lives. This is because it creates job opportunities and better diseases' treatment, both of which can have a significant impact on humanity.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses the prompt and maintains a clear position throughout. The ideas are relevant, focusing on career opportunities and medical advancements. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the link between scientific progress and 'career opportunities' is stated but not deeply explored, relying on a single example of NASA. Similarly, the medical argument is clear but could be strengthened by discussing the broader societal impact rather than just the COVID-19 example. To reach a higher band, ensure that each body paragraph provides a more nuanced analysis of the 'extent' to which science should focus on human improvement versus other potential aims like pure discovery.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. Cohesive devices such as 'The primary reason for,' 'Another important viewpoint,' and 'Consequently' are used to guide the reader. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the flow between sentences could be smoother. For example, the transition between the general statement about science and the specific mention of NASA is a bit abrupt. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear, and the essay is easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their ideas clearly. There is some attempt to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'scientific advancements,' 'complex diseases,' and 'humanity.' However, the range is somewhat limited, and there is occasional repetition of basic phrases such as 'important aim of science' and 'provide.' To improve, the writer should aim for more varied collocations and precise academic vocabulary. Some word choices are slightly simplistic, which prevents the essay from demonstrating the flexibility required for a higher band score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are recurring grammatical errors, particularly with articles (e.g., 'in the favor,' 'the aim of science') and capitalization (e.g., 'i' instead of 'I'). There are also minor issues with verb forms and pluralization, such as 'better diseases' treatment' instead of 'better treatment of diseases.' While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Increasing the variety of complex structures and proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy would significantly improve the score.
