Student answer (Band 5.5)

From my perspective, the crucial aim of science is to improve the lives of people in different ways. I strongly agree with the given situation as studying science or exploring different biological mechanisms of living organisms is nothing without its implementation for the benefit of mankind. Researchers work throughout their life for developing useful products so that the lives of common people will be more better than the past. If there is no scientific research or experimentations then the people of current age and the people of future will live the same dull and tough life. Science has made our lives very easier than the earlier decades with its advancements in various parts of life. For example, people of modern age can live up to hundred years even with the diseases like diabetes. This has become possible due to the development of insulin which lowers the blood sugar levels. Similarly the patients of asthma can also easily breath with the help of inhalers that are the miracles of science. In addition to both these problems, the solution of many other health problems has also been find out with great research and enthusiasm of the doctors. Nowadays, persons with cancer can also live up to many years due to the methods by which cancer can be early detected in patients and as a result of which a better cure is also provided to the patient which increase the age of the patient. Furthermore, there are many other beneficial services which the scientists rendered for us like improvements in the quality and quantity of crops which is a very excellent step due to the increasing number of population all over the world. We can enjoy in these days a variety of rice which involves the brown rice, golden rice and white rice. The golden rice has been developed due to the modification in one of the genes of white rice. Likewise, there are much more great discoveries and inventions done by the scientists which help a lot to the people in living a more great life as compared to the lives of the past people.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt clearly and maintains a consistent position throughout. The arguments are relevant, focusing on medical and agricultural advancements as evidence for the importance of science in improving human life. However, the essay lacks a clear paragraph structure; it is presented as a single block of text, which hinders the development of ideas. While the main points are supported with examples like insulin and golden rice, the discussion could be more nuanced by acknowledging counter-arguments or exploring the broader implications of scientific progress to reach a higher band. The ideas are generally well-supported but lack the sophisticated extension required for a higher score.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay lacks paragraphing, which is a significant issue for coherence. While there is a logical flow of ideas—moving from a general statement to specific medical examples and then to agricultural benefits—the absence of clear paragraph breaks makes the text feel like a continuous stream of thought rather than a structured argument. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Similarly', 'In addition to', and 'Furthermore', but they are sometimes used mechanically. To improve, the student should group related ideas into distinct paragraphs (e.g., an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion) to enhance the overall readability and logical progression.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the student to express their ideas clearly. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'biological mechanisms' and 'modifications', which are used appropriately. However, there is a reliance on repetitive and simplistic phrasing, such as 'more better', 'very easier', and 'more great'. These errors in collocation and comparative structures limit the precision of the writing. To achieve a higher band, the student should focus on using more sophisticated synonyms and ensuring that collocations are natural and accurate.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors that detract from the quality of the writing. Examples include 'the solution... has also been find out' (should be 'found'), 'increase the age of the patient' (should be 'extend the lifespan'), and 'the people of current age' (should be 'people today'). Additionally, there are issues with comparative forms, such as 'more better' and 'more great', which are grammatically incorrect. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score.
