Student answer (Band 7.5)

Science has played a fundamental role in shaping modern society, and its applications can be seen in almost every aspect of our lives. I strongly agree that improving people’s lives should be the primary aim of scientific research, because scientific discoveries can improve human health, safety and overall quality of life.

The main reason for prioritising human well-being is that science has the potential to save lives and improve public health. Medical research has led to the development of vaccines, effective treatments and advanced diagnostic technologies, allowing many diseases to be prevented or treated more successfully than in the past. For example, the development of vaccines has helped protect millions of people from serious infectious diseases. In addition, modern medical equipment enables doctors to detect illnesses at an earlier stage, which can significantly increase patients’ chances of recovery. Therefore, scientific progress in medicine has a direct and profound impact on human life.

Another important reason is that science can make everyday life safer, easier and more efficient. Advances in technology, transportation, agriculture and renewable energy have helped people communicate more easily, travel more safely and access essential resources. For instance, scientific developments in solar and wind energy can provide cleaner alternatives to fossil fuels, reducing environmental damage while meeting society’s energy needs. Similarly, improvements in agricultural technology can increase food production and help address food shortages in rapidly growing populations. These examples demonstrate that science can contribute not only to individual well-being but also to the long-term development of society.

In conclusion, I strongly believe that improving people’s lives should be the most important objective of science. Although scientific research may have many other purposes, its greatest value lies in using knowledge and innovation to improve human health, safety and living conditions.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response fully addresses the prompt by taking a clear position in the introduction and maintaining it throughout the essay. The ideas are well-developed, with specific examples provided for both medical and technological advancements. Each paragraph focuses on a distinct aspect of the argument—health and safety/efficiency—which supports the main thesis effectively. The conclusion reinforces the initial stance without simply repeating it. The response is well-structured and covers all parts of the task, meeting the requirements for a high band score by providing a balanced and logical argument.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay demonstrates a clear logical progression. Each paragraph has a central topic sentence, and ideas are linked smoothly using cohesive devices such as 'In addition', 'For instance', and 'Similarly'. The paragraphing is logical and contributes to the overall flow of the argument. Referencing is clear, and the transition between the introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion is seamless. The use of cohesive devices is natural and does not feel mechanical, which is characteristic of higher band descriptors.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

The vocabulary is precise and appropriate for an academic context. The student uses a good range of topic-specific terminology such as 'scientific research', 'infectious diseases', 'diagnostic technologies', and 'renewable energy'. The collocations are generally accurate, and the language is used with a good degree of flexibility. While the vocabulary is effective and clear, it could be further elevated by incorporating more sophisticated or nuanced academic expressions to reach the highest band, but it is certainly sufficient for a high-level response.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

The essay exhibits a wide range of grammatical structures, including complex sentences with subordinate clauses (e.g., '...allowing many diseases to be prevented or treated more successfully than in the past'). The majority of sentences are error-free, and the control over punctuation and tense usage is excellent. There are no significant grammatical errors that impede communication. The writing is fluent and demonstrates a high level of accuracy, consistent with the requirements for a high band score.
