IELTS Writing Task 2 question

The most important aim of science should be to improve people’s lives. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement? Give reasons for your answers and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

In todays contemporary world, the main role of scientific technology should be to make the lives of people better with its advancements and innovations. I agree with this viewpoint because the latest technology should have the capability to solve the complex issues of society in this modern era rather they are of medical, industrial, agricultural or educational field.

The main rationale behind my belief is that if a country is spending a particular amount of its economy on scientific knowledge then there should easy access of this knowledge to local communities so that they use this technology when the need. For instance, in hospitals if any individual is suffering from chronic disease and does not know the cause of that disease, so the person have right for advance laboratory tests and techniques to discover the route cause of that particular infectious or viral disease. Consequently, in COVID-19 scientists prepare vaccines as soon as possible to save the lives of people. Similarly, in population should get benefit from latest procedures, reactions and discoveries in beverage, baking, pharmaceutical, chemical and biochemical industries.

Furthermore, to improve life or farmers and students in educational institutions, they should be seminars and workshops on every level to guide them about new emerging technologies and latest varieties that give more production of wheat, rice and vegetables rather than conventional techniques and methods. However, students should teach about CRISPER CAS and advance Genetic engineering so that they implement in their practical lives and help their ancestors to get benefit on large scale

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses the prompt by taking a clear position in favor of science improving lives. The ideas are relevant, such as the mention of medical advancements during COVID-19 and agricultural improvements. However, the development is somewhat uneven. The second paragraph introduces several distinct areas (hospitals, beverage, baking, chemical industries) in a list-like fashion, which prevents deep exploration of any single point. The final paragraph attempts to discuss education and agriculture but remains slightly underdeveloped. To reach a higher band, you should focus on expanding one or two strong arguments with more detailed explanations or specific examples rather than listing many different fields.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organized into paragraphs, and there is a logical progression of ideas. You use some cohesive devices like 'Furthermore', 'Consequently', and 'For instance' to link sentences. However, the flow is occasionally hindered by awkward phrasing and mechanical transitions. For example, the transition 'rather they are of medical...' is grammatically unclear and disrupts the flow. Additionally, the referencing is sometimes weak, such as in the phrase 'in population should get benefit', where the subject is missing or incorrectly used. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that each sentence clearly connects to the previous one will help improve the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'contemporary', 'innovations', 'chronic disease', and 'genetic engineering'. However, there are several instances of imprecise word choice and collocation errors that slightly impede the reader. For example, 'route cause' should be 'root cause', and 'get benefit on large scale' is better expressed as 'benefit on a large scale'. There are also some awkward phrasings, such as 'help their ancestors', which is likely a misuse of the word 'ancestors' (meaning predecessors) instead of 'communities' or 'society'. Expanding your range of collocations would strengthen this score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While you attempt complex sentences, there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation. Common issues include subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'the person have right' should be 'the person has the right') and missing articles (e.g., 'in hospitals' instead of 'in hospitals,'). There are also structural errors, such as 'they should be seminars', which should be 'there should be seminars'. These errors occur throughout the text and, while they do not prevent understanding, they are frequent enough to keep the score in the 6.0 band. Focusing on proofreading for basic subject-verb agreement and article usage would be highly beneficial.
